long story short: this was an excuse to draw fun Avatar-world outfits.when working on this MSB/Avatar crossover [link] and my roommate asked what I was doing and I told her "the magic school bus characters as avatar characters"... this here is what she thought I meant.. but it seemed like a cool idea so I did it was well.. the MSB characters as avatar-world nation characters... like this picture: [link] I wanted two kids per kingdom... and we talked about how to divide them: nationality (well, since there's only one Asian kid that won't work), main outfit colors... or personality... and we defined the nation personalities that worked well when we got to the episode where Iroh is talking to Zuko about the nation differences... so it worked! of course this is as close as I could get... several of the girls are hot-headed and/or stubborn so I picked the most stubborn and most hot headed to be the earth and firenation girls. which works because Phoebe is definitely the most adaptive to change (tho of all the kids has the palest skin color) and Wanda is definitely the most free-spirited. The trouble with the boys was figuring which was the most hot-headed... and as calm as Carlos is... he ended up being my firebender! aanyway... I three Liz and Bus in again just because I loved them so much in the last crossover and made Frizz a guru.

Interestingly this pic has given me an idea for a fanfic. It's not completely planned out but here's what I've got so far: Carlos is the heir to the Fire Nation throne and the current Avatar. He and Keisha (the granddaughter of a Fire Nation noblewoman) are part of a inter-Nation study group led by Guru Frizzle. Certain nobles in the Fire Nation court have been not-too-subtly encouraging Keisha to court Carlos; however neither is interested, Carlos preferring his Earthbender classmate DA and Keisha fancying the Airbending Ralphie. Eventually said nobles decide that the current royal line has been corrupted by the foreigners and launch a rebellion, forcing Carlos, his family, his friends and Keisha's grandmother to flee to a guru retreat. Under the guide of Frizz and her fellow gurus, Carlos must rise to be the hero the world needs him to be...but when your life's collapsed around you, recovery ain't easy...

I think they are the most free spirited, the most playful. That's why I chose them. 
By the way, I just saw your post at the ff.net forum. I hope you find time to finish the httyd/msb crossover sometime! I'd love to see it

I think Ralphie and Wanda work best as air benders given that their alter egoes are air-related (which I suppose is due to their free-spirited natures). Air bending definitely fits them best.
Arnold's the most grounded, and he loves rocks, so he'd definitely be an earth bender. The others I think could fit into two or more categories at any given time.

One of my friends is practically dragging me through the Avatar series (I have an aversion to anything even remotely resembling cliche-ime), so I had to both laugh and groan when I saw this.
Bald Ralphie...interesting. Probably the only time you'll see him without hair is in this pic.

really? I don't find Avatar that cliche at all! In fact, even tho it's a cartoon, it was surprisingly good! (all I knew about it before was the love triangle the fans got into) but then I started watching and I was surprised just how good it was for someone who was... well... as old as me! Of all the TV shows I've watch within the last... oh several years, I've never had the desire to immediately watch it again! I had to wait 10 years before I wanted to watch star trek voyager again and stargate I'll only watch certain episodes and probably only because I'm making a music video out of them.
so... I don't know why you don't like it, I hope all the *drama* that you see online isn't what's keeping you from liking it. But if you don't like it just cuz, then I'll respect that, but I adore the show, my new favorite thing
