Description Ladies and gentlemen, if you would take a seat and lend me some of your time If you don't, then pass the coming paragraph.

We all know how our own image is an issue in our society, might it be our background, studies, physical appearance...and what I want to talk about, ethnicity.
Once I bumped on this: [link] (linking a precise moment but you can watch all the preview if you want)
It really hit me. Not that I wasn't aware of "levels" of prettiness among black girls (for those who don't know, light dark girls being prettier than dark dark girls to sum it up). No it was this little girl voicing that the darkest girl was the ugliest and the dumbest, and the lightest the prettiest and the smartest. As if skin had something to do with it. Sure I had faced things like this, like wanting to be lighter to be prettier as a kid (and asking my mother why did she married a black man instead of a white man as my sis and I could have come out lighter) or people asking me if I didn't want to use products to have a lighter skin. It's really dumb, and insulting. But it's how society made us build our perception of ourselves: having white girls with light skin as a beauty canon in medias created a scale on which the lighter you are, the closer you are to the beauty canon. Anecdotic but a good example, also the reason why you see more mixed race people to represent black people, simply because they are the "lightened" version.

BUT. While everything I said has sadness and frustration on my own experience, it doesn't mean I hate lighter skins. It's not because one kind of beauty has been placed as the beauty canon that it should be hated. In my case, I like the skin of my grandmother, the rose pale skin with blue eyes of a 100% caucasian, as I love the olive skin of my mother, a mixed race. And as I loved the dark skin of my father, going on the ebony. I like the pale skin of my best friend, and the pale gold skin of my little sis of heart. They are different for sure, but each of them have a different beauty which shall be appreciated as they are, not by comparing them. All of them are beautiful, all of them.

TL;DR. It was just my two cents.

Now about the art properly. I made researches on different skin tones and I must admit, if I had put all of them it would have taken more space. (also just to tell, I'm not an expert, here is the mix of what I understood) Reduced them to 11, which go in 3 big categories: fair, medium, and dark.
In fair you have porcelain, rose pale, light and pale gold.
In medium, gold, olive, medium dark and native
In dark, dark, dark olive and ebony
They are big categories as well, some being either warm (gold, olive, dark olive,...) or cold (rose pale, ebony...) or more neutral (light, dark...) according to which I wanted to convey. Let's say it's more a reference for me to understand them. For example my skin is the same "light" as Medium Dark, but yellow like Dark olive plus a touch of gold making it looking like copper. And Medium Dark is BeyoncΓ©
Fair skins are the big categories of white skin, pale gold and gold are the usual asian skin...as for native I call it like this but it can be middle-east, south asian, or native amercian skin, I admit I don't have a lot of knowledge on them but I didn't want to put them asides.
So I only put 11 of them, 11 symbol of infinite for me. They are so many of skin tones (and let's not talk about hair and other features), but I will try to use them more often in my work now that I made this reference sheet.

Yes! Unfortunately as I said, I don't know much about them (that's why I only added one called "native")
Learning about skintones is fun too, I might expand this line up

I completely agree with your "two cents" up there. Though it's strange, where I'm from all I hear about is darker skin tones, how to get tan, how to make a tan last longer, how to blah blah blah. Maybe that's the only side of the story I hear because I have very very light skin that refuses to go any darker xD People always want what they can't have. Anyway, I've learned to love my pale skin, but I've always admired dark skin and all the skintones in between.

I am VERY pale because I'm always indoors on PC screens, and my mum has a rose-pale complexion (she burns in sun xD) but no one has ever really complimented me on it because generally all the beauty-obsessed girls are fake-tanned to the point they are olive, even medium-dark! I know so many cultures still revere pale or paler skin, but in the cities/towns I've been in, all the English girls want to have a beach tan.

Anyway, all skin colours are beautiful!

Ah~ Yeah. I admit to shifting to light skin color tone with my characters but I do try to explore in other art pieces like the Chocolat Bonbon piece Luna commissioned me.
For me though, the reason I go for light skin color a lot is maybe because it's a feeling of familiarity...If you get what I mean. Birds of a feather flock together kind of thing? :"D;;; Like Russell Peters said though, we're all gonna be beige. /o/;;; *OFF TOPIC MEL BAD* When I was a kid though, I gave the figures in my coloring books literal yellow and orange skin because peach was foreign to me. XDDD I even gave an alien mix of yellow and blue to 'em because... IDK I was obsessed with those primary colors for a while. ΰ² _ΰ² ;;;
Another "race/skin tone does not matter" tale personally from kid me when I was just starting school. I used to call the Indian boy next door my cousin until my mom corrected me that he's just a neighbor/friend. My innocent reasoning/plausible defense for my blunder was that because I call his mom "Aunty" too and that equated to calling kids of "Aunty" my cousins too, like I do with my mom's sisters. (CHILD LOGIC IS WONDERFUL) (✿︢//3//︢);;;

Hope this gives you hope that not all is lost for the next generations.

That video gave me chills. I've watched a different video of the kids choosing the "dumb" child and the "smart" child out of the skin colours before, but never that segment on what the darker women thought of that. I've never understood why people made such a big deal out of skin colour. We're all human beings, why does skin colour have to play such a big role in what we think about each other? It makes me sad.
I'm the "Porcelain" on this scale. I'm paler than pale, haha! And I like my skin tone because it's me and it's the only one I've got, but I think all those women were gorgeous.
I really love this picture and the way you put your description. Very well said! (:

Unfortunately because skin colour differenciate us, and people are afraid of difference, mostly because they are afraid to get hurt by something they don't know about. ):
I like porcelain skin like yours! Artist wise they are pretty to paint *also I have a thing for porcelain dolls*

Wow first of all I'm sorry I havnt been on DA lately to comment on your work but this really stood out in my inbox.

Thank you for showing this broad range of skin tones because they are all beautiful.
I too as a child struggled a lot with my own skin and wanting to have a lighter tone because of the glorification of the porcelain complection. I'm mixed myself where my dad would be "Dark Olive" because he is east african, while my mother is "Rose Pale". I feel right in the middle as being olive toned, and although that is hardly dark I still felt the pressures of wanting lighter skin.

For me I hardly ever see mixed people but i can understand how upset you are over that it's used as a justifcation to make a lighter person of color who is considered "lighter" therefore "prettier". I hope that this perseption can change in the future.

Also this reference sheet is actually great for hlping to use the right shades in photoshop because I often have the trouble of making a shade too red or yellow

It's fine! XD I always reply late to comments so I won't launch you a rock for this

I think I can understand what you mean (because my mom who is caucasian/african mixed has this olive tone and wasn't fully accepted in either communities).

Yes and sometimes it comes back because with skin comes things like hair (it's until recently that we can find products for non caucasian hair, make-up, skin products, etc...) so society is slowly changing hopefully, not as fast as we wish, but changing eventually with the new generation.

I'm glad it can help you! Thanks a lot for passing by and leaving a comment Mae

I've never really gotten the whole point of racism anyway. Sure, we have stereotypes and ghetto's in Denmark. We don't like people from the middle east because they steal and make trouble and all the people from Poland takes all our work, but that's just what people say. It doesn't mean that you can't be different. I make it a habit to judge people for their personality, not their looks. (Though I try not to judge people at all)

When I look at this, the first thing I thought was, cool, skin tone references! I never even thought about all the other stuff until reading the text following.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

NeipyPien In reply to Izzy95 [2013-02-01 00:31:21 +0000 UTC]

And you're right when you say not to judge people at all. There are good and bad people in every social field/ethnicity/country/etc...
Well racism is fear of things you don't know. You don't if they can harm you, so you reject them. Once you learn to know them it gets better. (and there is latent racism which is linked to stereotypes which is harder to fight but not impossible)

Well I can't blame you it's really blurry. It's not really a skin tone ref since I did it for myself (plus the comment) and I didn't submit it to ressources category. But I won't complain if it can help

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Izzy95 In reply to NeipyPien [2013-02-01 08:53:24 +0000 UTC]

It's wasn't because it was blurry or anything, it's more because I'm not used to thinking that way, it's not something I really stumble across in my every day life.

But luckily I know a few organisations that actually work on bringing primarily children from different places together to try and stop all the racism and stereotyping to create a more peaceful world. I know it sounds very cheesy, but if it works, then I have no problem

The fact that you did this is making me spaz out

I really love love love when people do things like this because it is both a great referance and a piece of beautiful art.

I can tell the amount of thought that went into this and level of understanding the tones of each skin tone shade. It just makes my heart go pitter patter. You know how i feel about the darker skin tones but then again I love all skin tones. THe smallest changes in one or two tones in the light and undercolors really make the difference between one beautiful lady in this piece from another.

I am sad to say I did know a few darker skinned girls wanted to be lighter. As I have grown up in areas with large variations of skin tones and ethnic backgrounds, I never thought much to why someone would actually want that. Andd i could talk more but probably shouldnt XD

Guess that was like way too much to say but all in all I love this and all the colors. annnnnd i might have giggled at the sudden lighter hair with the medium dark. Reminds me of caramel

I never understood how people can say they don't like darker skinned people....I find them absolutely beautiful...and I've probably creeped out a fair share of beautifully skinned people because I tend to stare at them without meaning to while trying to figure out how I would paint their exact skin tone.

And I'm sortof shy, so It's not like I can just go up to a random stranger and be like 'I just love your skin tone, you are so pretty, can I stare at you for a while?' XD
