Description Today I got the chance to visit a spotted hyena research center. It was incredibly awesome! I've never been so close to large, powerful carnivores before! And the hyenas themselves were all gorgeous! Since the climate here is much, much colder than their native land of Africa, they all had these beautiful fluffy coats! Like this: [link] [link] [link] [link]

Anything that I might've considered even slightly canid-like in a hyena was apparently completely wrong; there's nothing dog-like about them even their noses are completely unlike anything I've ever seen in person.

Their leg anatomy is really interesting; their front legs are almost divided in half by their wrist joints (which they can turn and loaf on , very much like a cat). Their hind legs have this extra flexible ankle joint that allows the leg to bend in a way that would look broken on any other animal.
Their ears are awesome and huge! And unlike cats and dogs, their ears don't fold at the base of the outer edge when they turn them.
Their feet looked kind of club-like, the toes don't seem to be able to move or spread much. Take a look: [link] [link] [link] [link]

The researcher who was showing us around (myself and other docents from the zoo) gave some of the hyenas bones with meat on them, and those bones disappeared in less than a minute (they weren't exactly small bones, either!)

I did get to touch one, even though we were technically not allowed to . One of the hyenas was pressing itself against the fence, demanding attention. I stuck the tip of my finger in the fur that was sticking out through the chain link, and it was surprisingly rough at first, but much softer just a little further into the fur. The animal didn't even notice(? or care?) and I left with all fingers intact. Plus bragging rights.

Apparently that research center is where most of the spotted hyenas in North American zoos came from. It's also where Disney artists went to study hyenas when they made The Lion King. The researcher said that at that time, they had blunted the hyenas' canines to try and deal with some aggressive behavior (this practice is now illegal and not done anymore) but they forgot to mention that to the Disney artists. As a result, the TLK hyenas had teeny tiny teeth .

I did do some sketching while I was there, but I haven't scanned them yet. Have some inspired doodles instead. For now, at least.

As far as I'm concerned, hyenas are the most beautiful and awesome animals in the whole world right now

You're such a lucky girl to got the chance to visit a spotted hyena research center! ^^
Last year I worked as a volunteer in a game reserve in South Africa - with hyenas (spotted and striped) as well. We fed them and we could even touch them (the striped hyenas).Β They're such wonderful, unique animals! Every hyena has its own character (shy, brave, ballsy and so on). They are so curious, playful and intelligent! <3
And yes - they're my favourite animals, too!

Nice and cute sketches by the way.^^

Wow, I completely missed this comment!

Thank you so much!!

I definitely feel lucky, since that research center has probably been shut down by now

Oh wow! That must have been so amazing! I imagine that volunteering at a game reserve must be jaw-droppingly phenomenal!

Hyenas are such cool animals

Thanks!
Practice practice! Every day draw at least one thing. Look at videos and photos of animals and people. Collect images that inspire you. Draw a lot and you should be well on your way

Very nice, it's been proven hyenas can be tamed. One person in africa actually trained one to be a 'sheep dog' of sorts. They also seem to get along with dogs at least that's what I've seen in a video on youtube.

Ahhhh! Oh my goodness these are fantastic! I always loved hyenas, but I never knew all of that about their anatomy!
I love the pictures, and I'm really happy you explained what you saw and noticed when you went to the research center!

Thank you so much <3
A friend of mine does everything to make them beautiful and awesome for everyone. <3 It's *kantayeni ... She tries to explain how amazing those animals are and since I know her I became a hyenalover. I learned so much about them *w*

I can believe you that you loved to learn and to study about them - I am really envy. You did an awesome job here! I love every single sketch you drew!
I can't wait to see more of them! :3

Maaaaaaan, you guys are lucky!

Agreed, hyenas are awesome. They've baffled zoologists for years, with their matriarchal society, where females are not only bigger than males, they also sport male-like genitalia. Check out this national geographic vid about it: [link] .

Mmmh, i've never realized they had so little to do with canines (hadn't noticed that important tidbit of info about the joints!), still, rarely, you can spot them doing something... puppy-ish. Like chasing their own tail. Check out this cutie hyena: [link] !

Ahhh so lucky!! I wish I could see hyenas up close. D: My professor was telling us how he got close to both hyenas and lion cubs when he was working on Lion King.

Ooooh who is your professor???? The only instructor I've had who worked at Disney was there as a clean-up artist, so, she wasn't involved with the cooler aspects of the production.

Professor Troy Gustafson, he has to be my favorite ha ha. Lion King was the first film he worked on, so he was an assistant animator then. I can't recall much of what he said he worked on... All I know for certain is that he did work on some water splashes and all the tiny rock crumbles as Mufasa scales the cliff side. He's absolutely amazing with effects, andI'll be taking that class next year, I can't wait.

Whooaa!! That's awesome! You're so lucky to have him as a teacher!

I wonder if my school offers a 2D effects class?

Look it up! Effects are absolutely beautiful, I always wanted to learn them. Who knows, maybe I'll enjoy it more than character.
