Description I see it all the time on DA. Finally got to the point where it was one too many times. I had to throw something together about this issue.

Teeny tiny baby animals that are smaller than their parents' mouths!

those crappy doodles at the top of this tut-thing are exact copies of the baby-to-adult size ratio of some of the stuff hanging around here. I kid you not.

In a situation like that, one accidental swallow and whoops! Honey, I think I ate the kids!

Puppies/wolf cubs/lion cubs/kittens/etc. are not as small as you think. Please do some research before you assume.

Think of all the accidentally inhaled/swallowed/stepped on babies.

To those that want to draw baby animals that are this size in proportion to their parents, go look at marsupials and their offspring.

=========================================
Example is German Shepherd only due to the popularity of the breed and clear silhouette. Nothing personal.

I'll keep this in mind if I ever make a comic :3
I do indeed wish human babies where that size..
Birth wouldn't be so bad.

I'm sad that some of the German Shepherd examples you've used have that terrible sloped back/breed standard as opposed to a working German Shepherd. That sloped back is the result of inbreeding, and causes severe leg problems (that often result in PTS) after only a couple years of the dog's life.
I know that's not the point of this graphic, but I can't help but cringe every time I see a German Shepherd standing like that

In any case, yes! Say no to bite sized puppies!

eek, maybe I'll change them if I find the time @.@ I don't like those sloped backs either, those poor dogs.

I've actually seen and interacted with 1 week old puppies. They were little but not like the ones in this sketch.

One pup I held was small enough to fit in a coffee mug. Three weeks later, she was just the opposite!

but i will thank you for one thing on this looking at the images helped me answer a question i had about the puppies ears...

between 12 weeks and 14 weeks their ears firm up to points X3 thank you for that info that was helpful

I work at a pet supply store and we get a lot of puppies after Christmas, naturally. German Shepherds seemed to be pretty popular this year and I'm pretty sure most of their ears or their fluff, which makes them look like they just came out of the dryer when they were dry-clean only x3

Nonono, baby animals and humans are teeny weenie meenie tiny, if not, they would be very painful to birth.

Errrr...

Oops.

Neko, es increΓble lo valientemente que te expones al colectivo "ES QUE ES MI ESTILOOOO!!!" dandoles potentes bofetadas con visuales dosis de anatomΓa. YOU are my hero, lady!

The doodle directly above the mumma and her babies looks nearly right (to be fair) But the rest do look more like they've got a fairy-sized companion rather than a baby xD

I had no idea this was an "issue" either xD Ahh well, learn something new every day ^^
I'm sure this will be very helpful

What I would like to see (as a slight tangent) is how big foals are at specific stages/ages. It's reasonably simple to find an example of age but to see the same breed or individual example is something I've struggled to find

nekonotaishou In reply to OpalSkye [2013-01-14 20:09:53 +0000 UTC]

Fairy-sized companions! That must be the true answer! They're not drawing babies, they're drawing doggy Tinkerbells!

That would be a cool thing to see, too! I'm not too plugged into the horse community here, but does something similar happen there?

Well, as I've come to learn, if it doesn't exist, all that's left to do is make it yourself, yes?

OpalSkye In reply to nekonotaishou [2013-01-14 22:43:22 +0000 UTC]

Doggy Tinkerbells or dodgy? xD

Well, I've steered clear of drawing foals/fawns at the moment because I'm not entirely sure on sizing, anything I do draw is usually referenced from a photograph containing a mother and her offspring so the ratio is right according to that picture. I have, however, seen some extremely small babies with parents that look like they've just resized an adult sketch :/ There are other examples but I don't feel it's right for me to judge these things hehe

True, true, though I don't have access to horses to be able to make a photographic diary of sorts :/ It's possible that I just haven't looked hard enough ^^

Puppies! Puppiespuppiespuppies!
Seriously, though, this is a very good point. The only time I can think of when puppies would realistically be that small compared to their mother is if they were crossbreeds, and the mother was huge and the father was tiny.

nekonotaishou In reply to groundhog22 [2013-01-14 20:11:09 +0000 UTC]

Good point!

Seeing as how most of the worst examples I found were all supposed to be wolves, I don't think they can successfully use the crossbreeds excuse

Yeah, there's no such thing as miniature wolves, as far as I know.

B...b...but...tiny things are adorbzzzz!

Of course, if you are going for realism, this is very true.

If not...well...three cheers for micro-babies!

Haha, love it! Though some new mommas are known to eat their babies if they don't know what to do with them. o3o Had to rescue a pup from a silly hound dog who'd half swallowed it by the time I noticed.

Lol the dog holding the puppy by the scruff of it's neck looks like how I draw them. XD I always have trouble with puppy size and think part of the reason if always because I'm unsure of just how old the puppy is. XD

This is great : D
Not only is it good for the "tiny baby" issue, but it's a good reference for size at each age, aswell ^^
I've seen one too many puppy-sized two year old canine characters :b
