Description "I hope that no American will waste his franchise and throw away his vote by voting either for me or against me solely on account of my religious affiliation. It is not relevant."

I think it's disgusting that in seven states, atheists can't run for office.

I think it is a little more complicated, and probably needs to be done, at least in part, on a case by case basis, because few religious groups are truly monolithic in their beliefs, and that includes how they treat members of other faiths. A good example might be to compare JFK, who put his constitutional responsibilities ahead of any demands of his church, with Rick Santorum, who said JFK's comments separating church and state made him want to vomit. Any member of any faith who feels justified in using the government to enforce the rules of his faith on the unwilling would be disqualified in my mind from holding power. Would you say that his religious affiliation is the same as Kennedy's, its just his beliefs which are different?

Another couple of examples include the many churches in the southern US which not only endorsed and supported the Jim Crow laws (& earlier slavery) but also enforced them in the church. The Latter Day Saints were likewise pretty late to the civil rights party.

I agree to an extent. Religion is important because it helps you connect with a candidate and you get a sense as to their morality and values, which are undoubtedly important. Is it the most important thing? No. Does it matter? Let's all come to grips with reality, it matters.

It's different than voting based on skin color, though, because skin color has absolutely nothing to do with your values or personality. It really is totally irrelevant. If you vote based on skin color, it's totally racist.

Just my two cents.

Your two cents make sense, haha. Nah I agree that religion does play a big part in people's lives - for some people it sets their opinion on moral issues, and you're absolutely right about that. It does matter, but it shouldn't be the sole reason why someone votes for one person or another.

And yes, it disturbs me that there are still people out there, people that I have had the displeasure of meeting in the past, who have flat out said that they 'wouldn't vote for no n****r president.' :/

Correct. For me, I'm a social conservative because I'm a Christian, so I would most likely support a Christian candidate who is also a social conservative like me. At the same time, Christians tend to lean right on most issues whereas many, but not all, atheists tend to lean left, so just based on issues alone I'd support a Christian candidate 99.9% of the time.

That's disgraceful. I've also had the misfortune of meeting people who say that they need to get "cracker out of office and let Obama in". Race shouldn't be a part of it at all. Unless his race affects his values, race is 100% irrelevant.

Makes sense. I mean if you share the same values as the guy, go for it. That's the good part about the way the country is run, that we all get a choice. Sometimes the choices aren't the best, but there's always the choice.

We all make judgements based on our own values, religious or not. As long as those judgements aren't horribly bigoted or judgmental like with race or gender...

Religion and morals are less connected then most think... hell just reading the Bible would reveal how much violence the supposid "Moral" are capibleof.

so I agree... religion should be the last thing on someone's mind when voting.

Voting by religion is essentially saying "Yeah, I don't give a damn about policies, or how this person being in power will effect my future. He's just part of My Tribe, so that makes it ok, right?" It actually disturbs me that people would choose to do this. Political discourse was never perfect in the United States- just look at Jefferson and Hamilton, or Andrew Jackson's entire campaign and presidency- but this is proof that it's degrading to a level that is just abominable.

That quote by Kennedy really says it all. It's depressing, is what it is We can only hope that people will change their minds... . .....but you know that's probably doubtful. :/

It really is. And sadly, people are stubborn creatures. It'll take a miracle to fix politics at this point, if it's even possible. But we have to keep trying.

It's the same principle as not voting based on skin color...tbh I think people have issues with both, at least in the US, seeing as we've had 44 Presidents and not a single one has been Jewish, and I think only one or two have been Roman Catholic, and there were a lot of people at my school who were saying to vote for Obama, and when I asked them why, they said 'Cuz he's black...' Run-on sentence but you get the point.

Nekromanda In reply to EllaJoan [2012-01-28 12:49:00 +0000 UTC]

Ah yeah I understand completely. The "Vote for Obama because he's black" thing was very popular in the area I used to live in! I agree it's probably something that the US has issue with, something that they should definitely get over!

Thanks for the comment!

While I stand up for my fellow followers when they're in need, I believe fair treatment is part of good treatment. I wouldn't be happy if people only voted for me or gave me an award just because of my religion, race, colour, gender or whatever. I think any honest person would rather face losing than win because of special treatment.

I wouldn't be happy, either. Thank you for your comment I really appreciate it.

PlagueJester [2012-01-28 01:46:23 +0000 UTC]

That really isn't true.

You see, one of the key components to defining a religion are it's moral values. So, you know the candidates moral values (to an extent) based upon their religion. And their moral values are intensely important.

Especially considering than many of the high profile subjects in politics include things like abortion.

Nekromanda In reply to PlagueJester [2012-01-28 01:53:25 +0000 UTC]

Yes, morals are important to a point. But being a political leader is not entirely about things that depend on the morals that religion instills in its followers. Voting for someone (or not voting for osmeone) solely based on whether they belong to one religious group or the other is ridiculous to me, considering that 1) You don't have to be religious to be a moral person, and 2) Religion has no place in the politics of government.

Ah yes, you did say "solely" in your stamp.

I apologize. Voting based solely on that would be wrong.
