Well, it's like being queer everywhere else, only rewind 30-40 years. They know gays and lesbians, but not well, and knowing doesn't mean liking. FTM, MTF is known in intellectual circles, sort of, but the rest if a big darkness. Hysterectomies, oophorectomies and the like are illegal unless there is a "life-threatening condition", and they take this very seriously. Gay marriage is not likely to be legalized in this century, let alone raising kids together. I'm frequently told that I won't get a job unless I try to look more feminine (which is a bit WTF, I don't even wear binders). Transition is not covered at all, and the psychological evaluation process scares away most people anyway because it's reminiscent of the old ways of the "State Defense Office". (I don't know how to explain this to Westerners, but imagine that a visit from them would mean you are not only questioned, but your family won't ever see you again; and you never know which night they are coming.)
But the situation is gradually improving. There are gay people at universities who don't get harassed. Usually it's the smart crowd that adjusts first. Still, there areappalling things, including hate crimes recently with the "radical right" on the upswing (we are having an election in two weeks and they are likely to get the second place, with the "mild right" being first, which is not good either, considering that their posters contain straight couples with 3 kids saying "Save the families!").
So, it's not cool to be queer here (though in some nightclubs, girly girls pretend to be lesbians so they can seduce guys better, which has been touted as a sign of acceptance, but I think it's demeaning towards ALL women... meh), but it's survivable, especially if you don't care about negative opinions about yourself flying around. (I don't give a shit because I'm an aspie and I have enough friends online anyway )

An aspie really? Must be good not to care sometimes, when the world is too fucking stupid. Thanks for taking the time to write!!!
Heh, it's exactly the same here, and you don't have to explain the State Defense Office. By the way if you live in Budapest I'm an Easterner, strictly, because I'm in Greece. Damn, it's fucking exactly the same. Althought transpeople do get to go to reality shows so greek audiences can laugh at their sorry state. And we do have a (formerly) gay district, where gays and lesbians go to be gay for the weekend - and then return to their closets for the rest of the week.
We do have a strong-ish Pride Parade each June in Athens, and we've had one for the last 5 years. It still won't get support from the mayor and it's usually on a Saturday so it won't disturb 'normal city life', but we're planning to change that. Do you do any of that?
Fascists are always a problem, and it's getting worse the poorer Europe becomes and the more immigrants flow. They even threw a hand grenade at an antiestablishment and queer-friendly squat last year.
It's survivable here too, if you're ok with hiding. You can also be who you are even in public, if you don't care about assholes who will become verbally or (rarely) physically violent.
On the other hand, they don't have a clue what M2Fs or F2Ms are, so it's easier to transition, because they see a person wearing a tie and they're sure it's a guy, and a person who wears a pink skirt is probably a woman, unless she is too masculine to pass. It's simple in their minds. Of course this means they're super-conservative and think gender is the same as your genitals, and they're sexist to the point of wanting women back in their kitchens. But we have formed a few groups, like the lesbian athens group and a few others, and it's doing us good to be involved politically in our own lives. It feels as if we're making a difference sometimes!
I'm an m2f dyke, I transitioned 5 years ago and it went mostly without a hitch. We have one (1) shrink (in the whole country) who deals with transpeople, and we had to educate him ourselves, but he gets the job done. Am I right to think you are on the f2m side of the spectrum? You can pm me anytime!

Oh, hell, I thought you were in the US, in fact this is my assumption for everyone here
Gay district? Hmm, sounds a bit ghetto-like but can slso be good, i.e. you can be yourself more in a self-sustaining LGBT community (the T is too damn often neglected, though). Reality shows, bah. Talk about projecting a bad image. Schadenfreude FTW :-/
We have the annual Pride in Budapest, though the date always changes around and there are a bajillion police people around it (and even so, violence happens - last year, I acquired some bruises and lost my mp3 player going home). It's sad that even some LGBT folks are against Pride now because it "attracts negative attention" and shows the outrageous side of us (dancing half-naked boys, and in 2007 some guy made fun of the Bible, etc.), but for fuck's sake, it was the drag queens who were at Stonewall! Don't these people have any sense of historical continuity? Okay, Stonewall didn't happen here... but we should've had one.
Well, at first I thought I was a dyke, plain and simple, then I thought I was full-blown f2m, now I'm kinda settled on female-to-neuter. Maybe I'm too much of a scaredy-cat concerning transition, or omething like that... there is a piece in my gallery about how I see being a woman, I pretty much see it as a "condition", rather like dyscalculia (which I'm having my battles with right now, trying to switch majors and all), or maybe more like some physical disease (since it makes you bleed, etc.). But I'm not quite sure about dicks and balls either. Sometimes it would be good but to think about the fact that an artificial one never works just like the original... I don't even bind because I have problems with grooming (morning rituals) anyway, being rigid and forgetful, and because it wouldn't count with girls anyway, once we get to actually doing it. Which is a stupid excuse, I know, since I will never get laid (social awkwardness), but it doesn't stop being true

I really like this. I have always found propaganda posters from any country fascinating, especially circa 1940's, and the Russian posters in particular.
Did you have a specific poster that sparked this idea, or was it just done in the general style?
