I miss that game. I built things like this too. I came up with a way to have night-time only beacons back when I still played. I remember that I has underground redstone dust connecting daylight sensors to sticky pistons. The sensors were under glass so that they could be underground and still get sunlight. The sticky pistons would move the blocks out of formation causing the beacon to turn off. I had diferent version but it's been a year or so and I don't remember everything.
