Description A spriting tutorial as requested by

I hope this is clear enough. Sorry that I didn't include pictures of the shading process, I think it is explained rather thoroughly in the tutorial. And of course, everyone has their own style to shade, so just do it the way you feel the most efficient.

Just the resulted sprite can be found here: [link]

It should work by simply selecting the magnification glass tool and then clicking anywhere on the canvas.

As a little tip, I think the two things you might want to change the most are the colours and edit the lineart on the body and head.

I know, it's really crappy. It was a real 5-minute rush. Sad.

Why leave it at five minutes? I wouldn't even dare show stuff I made in five minutes, apart from quick sketches that are supposed to look rather rough.

I thought i'd fix it later with a tutorial of some sort, as i'm horrible at scratch spriting.

Way too detailed for my liking. Plus I'm absolutely terrible at human anatomy.

I think I'll pass on this one, sorry. I don't feel comfortable if I'm not spriting in my main or my M&L hybrid style.

Well, first off, the battle characters look like edits of official sprites. They aren't bad, but they could use some kind of...new touch. Maybe spriting them in an entirely new style?

The mugshots, while okay, don't really capture the personalities of the characters, though I'm going to assume they're just the basic mugs so it is understandable.

I would suggest you shift the existing characters onto another sprite style, perhaps sidescroller, perhaps RPG overworld sprites. That, and perhaps try creating some entirely original characters not based on Kingdom Hearts. You'll never learn anything new if you just stick to the same old stuff.

Ah ha, I was just trying to make some sprites yesterday in Photoshop and didn't know what I was doing at all. Didn't come out too good. This will probably help me make some better ones.

Although I don't think I will make many sprites, this gives me an idea of what I need to do. Thanks for making it!

Well if this did help you out, I guess it's serving its purpose. Thanks for the feedback.

Very nice tutorial, Neslug! There's not very many good tutorials out there (or ones that aren't needlessly complex), although your one is very good and great as a beginner's guide to creating basic sprites. Heck, if I can understand it, then it's got to be good and simple enough! Excellent work as ever!

Neslug In reply to SacredDragon [2008-11-24 23:22:36 +0000 UTC]

Now that I think about it, I could've made it longer somehow, but I guess it's OK as a quick tutorial as well.
