Ahh I'm happy to hear that! I'm personally bored of the really stereotypical mermaid so I'm thinking of unique and creative ways to shake up the design a bit. It's definitely helping my design skills, and for the most part makes sense that they would be breathing air being half human (and in this case also half mammal with the whale tail)
