Description 013/365 (that I did yesterday) character design sheets! I actually wanted to know if anyone here was interested in viewing my manga? It's currently in progress with the planning stage i.e. character designs being finalised and story and scripts being written. However, I wanted to post the pages! I've been working on this story and my second story (Rahkanae) for over 4 years now and I'm tired of it all just sitting in my head. So I'm going to draw it out, as I had planned all those years ago. Here's a quick run down of these particular characters:

Caio
He's the main protagonist of the first book and features in the second. Once a fire spirit he was captured by the Delapsi and delivered the job of working eternally as a warrior in Atria Caeil, along with eleven others the same of his kind. He has a very sour personality, rough around the edges he's usually quite hard to get through to. Devoid of expression he belongs to a race of beings that uphold honour and strength above all else. In the first story his job is protect an ancient remnant of civilisations once passed, a remnant that was once used as a bargaining tool between worlds for the gods and contains tremendous power. Sent to Earth on a task to recover it, Caio becomes partnered with two poor Riveriens and their dragon in a kingdom lost to corruption and deception. Travelling across the world he and his companions face utter annihilation, defeat and death.

Aaro (pronounced Arrhh-ro)
Aaro was born into royalty and was to be announced future king. However growing up a rather sheltered child he had no idea of the real world, and was soon brought to realise this, as his parents were murdered in the ever lasting war of the two kingdoms. He learnt quickly how to fight, taught by his lover of whom was also lost in battle. He made a deal with death after nearly committing suicide himself, bring her back and he will be ever in his debt. Along with a heavy portion of his life he gave away his soul for her to live again, but in a different form. Once a human dies they cannot be brought back into their own body again, so she was given a magical body of a small desert fox, capable of shape shifting into any other creature aside a human. Aaro has the ability to control her in certain situations using his right eye which is covered by bandages.

This has to be my favorite!    I find Caio very interesting, though i desire Aaro more (May i say this? Lol!) I love the idea of his lover being a fox. Or any other form as mentioned. In my opinion, it makes his love more real and warm, is this understandable? I hope so   ...
Hopefully, i can get a glance at your comic soon~ I love character designs! Also, great work!!!

NesoKaiyoH In reply to Lennju [2016-09-17 21:23:49 +0000 UTC]

Yeah Aaro is pretty shy when it comes down to it, he's always bee dependent on others so having to rely on himself is tough :')
Their bond together is inseparable, she doesn't remember the previous life they had together as lovers, she is only bound to him through loyalty and almost by contract through Death.

Yeah it's in progress! I won't be posting pages until I've got quite a few done (I will be posting teasers and the prologue in full however) as then I won't be rushed to produce them every week! I should hopefully get to producing the pages early October owo

OH- she doesn't remember. That is kind of sad D:! But the other way around, it is freaking cool It is so refreshing, when someone has such passion and love for his characters!

I'm ready when you are ready! I'm looking forward to it

Yeah, I usually try to stay away from the whole 'tragic backstory' trope, but he's pretty different from the main set of characters so it's nice to have him different. She's a shapeshifter too but her preference is a Phoenix, which is akin to her name :')

I'm so glad you're looking forward to it! I hope to impress >w<

Yeah, i understand that . The hole Naruto backstory thing became too much (always tragic backstorys and most of them are not THAT sad ).

  You will!

NesoKaiyoH In reply to Lennju [2016-09-17 21:45:09 +0000 UTC]

Yeah speaking honestly I'm kinda tired of seeing that kind of story unless it's done well. None of my characters in particular have necessarily tragic backstories. Obviously they don't have the best lives considering the places they live in or what happens to them during the story etc. but I've tried to keep them overall unique

Lennju In reply to NesoKaiyoH [2016-09-17 21:49:39 +0000 UTC]

And that is, what makes a story good! I'm a big fan of Hunter x Hunter (maybe you are familiar with that ?) and one of my beloved characters never speaks about his past, but it isn't necessary, because the story is so magnificent, it doesn't need that in particular .

NesoKaiyoH In reply to Lennju [2016-09-17 21:55:11 +0000 UTC]

A lot of the time a good story is shown through the story developing itself, not a character talking about it. Which is what I hope to do well, as a couple of characters including Caio have a few deep secrets that are pretty treacherous in the eyes of his peers.

And nahh I haven't seen it, I do watch anime but not very often :')

Oh wow that is old xD Omg you should totally do it! I've been planning my manga for the past 4+ years now but I never started because I always thought I wasn't good enough. I still have tonnes to learn even though the skill aspect isn't that bad anymore xD

Oh wow thank you so much T_T <3

Izagar In reply to NesoKaiyoH [2016-08-17 19:21:54 +0000 UTC]

My only issue is my art is still subpar in my eyes. Like I'm having difficulty with poses and stuff... It seems too "forced" or the body is too stiff. Wish I had someone who could help once in awhile, but the groups on DA have more subpar people who draw worse than me giving critique. :/

Not a problem. Your art is interesting and professional and made me wanna watch you ;;;w;;;

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NesoKaiyoH In reply to Izagar [2016-08-17 20:05:22 +0000 UTC]

Well, the good thing about that is that you recognise your mistakes. That's the first step to improving! If you see something wrong, but you don't know how to understand or draw it properly then it's good to reference. Do studies of that particular thing, draw it until you can draw it without photos, and then you'll be fine! In terms of the body being too stiff, it possibly means you're either focusing too much on anatomy or you don't have an understanding of gesture. In which case doing some gesture studies of figures would help solve that problem.

Awhh ;_; <3

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Izagar In reply to NesoKaiyoH [2016-08-17 20:18:22 +0000 UTC]

Yeah that's what someone on Twitter told me. That I'm focusing too much on anatomy and less on gesture. Thing is I don't understand gesture drawing? ;w;

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NesoKaiyoH In reply to Izagar [2016-08-17 20:33:11 +0000 UTC]

The basic premise of a gesture drawing is capture the flow and dynamic of a figure. I.e. this may be the arc of which a figure lunges into, the planes of the body simplified into shapes etc. It's basically laying in the action of a form without putting too much detail into it.
Something like this:

You can always look up YouTube tutorials on how to gesture draw as well if you're having problems owo

Izagar In reply to NesoKaiyoH [2016-08-17 20:35:30 +0000 UTC]

I see. I'm wondering if gesture drawings can be used in mangas and stuff. Like if the human body is actually capable of these things without it going from realism to stylized? I'm a manga artist but I don't try to draw too real, but I also want to make my characters have plausible poses.

Sorry if I'm taking up too much of your time babbling ;w; I just wanted some other artist's pointers. We need to help one another xD;

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NesoKaiyoH In reply to Izagar [2016-08-17 21:17:43 +0000 UTC]

I don't see why not, having read a few mangas myself I've seen characters simplified into these almost basic shapes on bigger panels where they're not the focus. I'm most likely going to do that too for my own, if every single panel with characters was detailed too much it would be a bit too overpowering on the eyes, so finding the balance is key xD

And no of course not! If it helps you then I'll gladly talk all night owo

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Izagar In reply to NesoKaiyoH [2016-08-18 00:38:06 +0000 UTC]

Was gonna do the same thing... Basic shapes, less detail, for characters not the focus. Maybe even just make them have a gradient as Shilin has done a couple of times.

Can I call you senpai? *shot* No but seriously... Can I ask maybe for advice if you have time? ;w; Never any rush if I do ask you. It just may help me improve better if I have a "senpai" overlooking me. >w< If you want, that is. >w<;;;;;;;;

Ooh, webcomics! I love webcomics! I'll be sure to keep an eye out for it!

And yeah, I get what you mean about having something sitting around in your head for ages >_< I've been having a webcomic idea sitting in my head for about 2-3 years myself. But soon, hopefully...

By the way, what is it you use to draw? Pencil or ink? Or a combination of both?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NesoKaiyoH In reply to The5thVegetable [2016-08-16 21:50:35 +0000 UTC]

Haha thank you! Yeah I love them too. But you can't beat a good printed manga in front of you! xD

An amazing artist told me, drawing out the pages is better practice than any amount of preparation. So if you really want to draw it out, it's best to just get started in it owo

I draw solely in ball point pen, these were also done in pen. But for drafts, proper pages will be drawn out in pencil first and then inked as I don't want to risk ruining the pages if I go wrong with the pen.

The5thVegetable In reply to NesoKaiyoH [2016-08-18 10:44:41 +0000 UTC]

Problem for me with getting started is that I wanna draw it digitally... Which i'm not capable of right now * -*

And, I see! I'm tempted to try drawing with pen as well. I've scribbled some with a blue pen out of boredom before, and it was a lot of fun! I gotta ask though,  how'd you achieve the grey tones, and the(very smooth) gradients?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NesoKaiyoH In reply to The5thVegetable [2016-08-18 12:32:50 +0000 UTC]

Well it's a matter of practice. All you can do is draw digitally and that's what will make you comfortable with it, there's no other way unfortunately. But take it with a grain of salt, it might take a while to get used to and it may not be the best at first but don't worry! You'll get the hang of it eventually.

Yes, since I changed to pen I've never been back to pencil aside the odd drawing here and there, it's so fun and I honestly love it so much xD it doesn't smudge, the lines are clean and strong, I get more gesture out of pen as well as it feels heavier.
The grey tones are predominantly gradients I've added in Photoshop, but there are patches of pen shading in there too. I linked the original below without the added gradients to show you how it looked before editing owo

i.imgur.com/5lwmsDl.jpg

Adding gradients personally just helps me achieve more depth, and makes the drawings easier to read, as some people do struggle sometimes.

The5thVegetable In reply to NesoKaiyoH [2016-08-20 00:36:25 +0000 UTC]

The problem is more-so issues with my tablet than not being used to digital drawing. I have some experience with digital drawing- I drew my avatar myself, and a few other things(on a tablet without a screen- but I gave that on away to my little sister), and i've had issues with my new one that I can't get fixed and am too lazy to look more into >_<

And I guessed the gradients were added digitally! It's genius, really. I've read some pure black and white manga(FMA, Noragami), and it does get really difficult to see what the heck is going on without any middle-tones to break it all up at times. Also, i'm not sure if you'd know anything about this, but is pen more resistant to smudging than ink when you colour in with markers? 'Cause i've had some situations where the markers have smudged the ink, and it's been really annoying when i've tried to draw flat colour. It can of course turn out well too when I want to exploit that to create some interesting shading, but otherwise, it's a pain in the butt!

By the way, gotta say, I absolutely love your artstyle! I'm not sure if you bother with commissions at all, but if you do, imma go ahead and say that you're the most likely person for me to throw money at for art(If that's something I ever deem affordable). Keep up the good work! c:

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NesoKaiyoH In reply to The5thVegetable [2016-08-20 14:07:17 +0000 UTC]

Well if it's problems with your actual tablet then there's not really much you can do unless you just try and persist with it. Otherwise, you could always just draw traditionally and edit digitally, that's what I usually do. I'll draft out pages traditionally in pen, then sketch out the final pages in pencil and then lineart over the top, add greyscale values and gradients in Photoshop etc. There's always a way around something so try as many ways as you can owo

That or you could buy a new one, or just look into getting it fixed hmm??

Ahh, I've never read black and white pure manga, it just hurts my eyes too much. I've been drawing with and painting greyscale for rather a few years now so I prefer it much more to just black and white, I personally find it more visually appealing. In concerns to the pen being more resistant to smudging when colouring with markers, I did do a few exercises a couple weeks ago and from what I gather, so long as the pen is completely dry beforehand then it's completely fine. I sketch in pen anyways so it's not like I value everything too much. If you want to look more closely at a pen and marker drawing, the Barbary Lion skull I uploaded last week is done with pen and marker owo

Thank you so much! I really appreciate when I get people who enjoy my artworks! Haha yes I am currently open for commissions! I find it very endearing that you would consider commissioning me xD

Yeah you too owo

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

The5thVegetable In reply to NesoKaiyoH [2016-08-29 09:02:38 +0000 UTC]

Well, i'm very specific in regards to how I wanna do it x3 So i'll be waiting 'til I get the tablet issue fixed. But, i'm experimenting some with my art nontheless! And i'm actually intending to steal your digital gradient trick for a drawing i'm working on! >:3 As for buying a new one... Would if I could, but my wallet isn't exactly overflowing at the moment :/

And yeah, I understand why you haven't. It often gets difficult to see what the hell is going on without any colour to reassure you of what is what. And I think i'll look into getting a pen one of these days! I haven't worked with pen much, but what little i've done, i've found very fun!

And hey, your art IS good! Just tellin' the truth 'ere. I don't really commission stuff, but... Don't be surprised if I come along and throw some money at ya, eh?

Also, jeeesus... Where the hell did those 9 days go? I'm a horrible conversationalist... #Procrastination

Well, I've already had a few people say they're gonna use that technique, but it's not like I created it, I'm sure it#s been done in the past xD

Yeah pen is really fun, for bigger pieces of course I draw in pencil and then lineart but 99% of the stuff I do is straight pen, you get really nice clean lines and high contrast, it doesn't smudge or anything, it's wonderful.
Haha thank you xD

Hey I've kept this response short so it doesn't deter you from replying uwu

It's a great technique! Not used it QUITE yet, but I definately plan to. Sadly haven't had the energy to draw lately ' -' When I do though, i'll be sure about getting a pen to draw with!

And sorry for the really, really late response >_< My energy's just been completely gone for the past few weeks!
