Description This swan was caught in mid take off.
I have made this image bigger than usual and thus
I have watermarked it to protect it.

Faves are most welcomed!

I've seen the odd group flying south but never taking off. I nearly broke my neck getting this shot. I ran about 20 meters to get in front of it and slipped at the last second lol. Just happened to land on my side with my up and quickly got a few shots off. Then laid there moaning to myself lol

thanks I don't see photography as 'better' than someone elses. Everyone is different and of different skills etc Theres always a learning curve and some people are newer to it than others I like your shot

That's a good view, I've not got enough confidence in my work though.

its all down to dedication and practice You have to be out there an hour before/after sunrise and sunset to make use of the best light of the day. I've only been shooting two years but have put a lot of time (not to mention money!) into it.

Very nice capture. It's a wonder that these large birds manage to take of from the water at all. But somehow they do, as we can see here .

One thing I liked in addition to the really great photo is how the watermark doesn't detract from the image and almost seems to be a planned artistic touch.

Neutron2K In reply to ztormbringer [2007-12-28 19:14:15 +0000 UTC]

ta yeah the watermark seems to work well. I don't think it can be removed all that easily without some heavy cloning so seems to be ok.

Wow, I actually like the new watermark. It's got a nicer, more simplistic look than DA's, and the bigger picture size makes up for any watermark.

Neutron2K In reply to ProcrastinatingPanda [2007-12-22 00:55:27 +0000 UTC]

That shot was just being in the right place. Its rare to see swans fly as most of them have their wings clipped in the UK (I think anyway).

I spent a total of 5 hours laying in mud on the day I got this shot at two different locations. This was captured at Hatchets Pond (I have various shots of this place) in the forest. There were three mute swans there and there was some rival battle going on. every time this one landedon the lake, the other would take after it VERY quickly and chase it off.

I was laying in the wrong spot and saw this one taking off so I lept up and ran sideways till i was in line with it and then somehow managed to slip on some mud and land face down in time to get the shot lol

nah no gear damaged. I have a rule.

If I trip up with my camera and any of my expensive glass on it, my face will break my fall

It's so easy to slip into airplane and air traffic lingo when we're talking about birds, isn't it? For instance, I call their feet their "landing gear"!
