Replaying Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald reminded me just how much I love the Hoenn region in Pokemon; the third generation is my favorite. I always loved how the Hoenn Pokemon had simple, yet charming and creative designs. (More than that I loved how a region defined by its diverse environment had villains in the form of eco-terrorists. Very, very fitting.)

I experimented with coloring here and made use of swatches and different shades of purple, blue, and yellow. The background was tricky: I didn't want the Swablu to be too distracting, but I also didn't want to hide them entirely in the clouds. Working out colors for the clouds was a pain but I tried to keep with Altaria's color scheme.

(Back in 2005/2006 I had an Altaria named Amiboshi after my favorite character from the anime Fushigi Yugi. It was female despite the namesake being male...)

The cloud brushes used in the background are from Obsidian Dawn.
