He is much older through 90% of the movie, so that is understandable. But this is a very defining moment for his character so it is a beautiful choice for a composition. But right away I thought, "That kind of reminds me of Howl, oh and his chest is glowing did he just swallow the star? I have to click on this and see if it's Howl." And to be fair, I absolutely adore that movie, seen it many times.

I saw this and before I even read the title, I knew it was Howl. I ADORE this. You've clearly got a sharp, creative mind and I love how you gave such vibrant life to one of my all time favorite stories. If you've only seen the movie, you should definitely read the book.

What a great rendition of a beautiful scene! That was my favorite moment in the movie and I wish there had been more details about it in the book. I just think there's something very poetic about the whole idea of catching a falling star, and it tells a lot about the innocence of a child to give away his own heart just to save a fading spirit... It's the one thing that made me feel sympathy for Howl. Your drawing is awesome!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Newsha-Ghasemi In reply to Veganotron [2012-12-11 11:54:10 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much! and i agree it is very poetic. I dont know why i was so affected from the movie since the part was so brief, but i had to draw it and how i thought he must have felt.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Veganotron In reply to Newsha-Ghasemi [2012-12-14 03:33:10 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome. I'm not sure why either, but I feel the same way. That short scene alone was so moving and powerful... (The movie as a whole is actually one of my favorites.)
Neither the movie nor the book tells us how Howl felt right after the exchange was made, but I would have liked to know. I'm sure it would have been a lot like your drawing. I don't know if the process hurt him a lot (with that fire ball going down, ouch! ), but I guess he must have felt that he had lost more than just a piece of flesh, since the best part of his personality came from his compassionate heart... I wonder to what extent he was aware that he was changing afterwards.
Calcifer had better not complain too much! Though finding himself stuck with such a weight as a human heart must have been weird for him too.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Newsha-Ghasemi In reply to Veganotron [2012-12-15 18:01:46 +0000 UTC]

you know i never considered how it affected calcifer D':

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Veganotron In reply to Newsha-Ghasemi [2012-12-16 08:25:31 +0000 UTC]

Heh, well it's just a random thought that struck me. I think the implications of the pact tend to appear more drastic for Howl because it was such a big loss for him, while Calcifer rather gained something from it (he was supposed to die, after all)... But I'm thinking, besides losing his freedom all of a sudden and not being able to leave the ground anymore, I suspect that living on a child's heart might have had some effect on his character, in the same way losing his heart affected Howl for the worst. Maybe that would explain why he's really not so "heartless" for a fire demon?
