Description Patrick Woodroffe [link] is one of the greatest artists alive. His work is a major influence on me; his daring use of mixed media just turns me on! Woodroffe's attention to detail, coupled with his supernatural power to pull directly from his imagination without editing, result in work that challenges the mind. Please do check out his site.

This piece was inspired both by the fact that I love to swim, and Woodroffe's amazing backgrounds. A lot of his pieces have fantastic marbled backgrounds. Now, since Mr. Woodroffe is A GOD, he uses arcane things like algae sizing to float paint on water and do his marbling. (Actually, he uses his GODLIKE POWER to simply tell the pigment to levitate on water, and it does so gladly.) My experiment with algae sizing was an utter disaster.

So, following in Woodroffe's barnstorming path, I fell on my face. After an expenditure of brainpower, I remembered that OIL AND WATER DON'T MIX. Thus inspired, I cast my greedy eyes on a set of oil paints I had lying around. The result was simple and elegant, and satisfied my lust to Be Like Patrick.

Since I used illustration board, the paint dried quickly, allowing me to enhance the marbling with airbrush acrylic paint. The whales just had to swim through space, and the piece was complete!

wow, this is a stunning piece of work! My standard question: how long did this take you to make?

Thank you!!!

It took a couple of weeks. I knew what I wanted to draw, but I needed to wait until the oil paint I used to marble the background dried before I could really dive into the painting.

haha, oils, i tell you. Where I'm living now it literally takes a whole week for an oil layer to dry. back in Sacramento, during the summer, I could whip out an oil painting in a day and dry it outside in the dry heat ... beautiful conditions
