I've been teaching myself how to Watercolor recently and here's some slightly boring academic work in that vein. Each of these little paintings lasted exactly 1-hour as per the assignment. I thought some out there might want to see some of my less fantastical work

I'm working on learning watercolor for my Ap portfolio for my high school class. Sadly, it's not turning out too well. Do you have any general tips that you can give?

hmmm...let's see. I Always start with a base-tone...I just wash over the whole piece...saving whatever whites I know i'm going to use. I always make sure I have a relatively tight pencil sketch underneath so that I know where I'm going. Work from reference, be patient and let each layer dry before you go into it (use a hairdryer if that doesn't work) That's probably the most important thing...you don't want to be painting wet-into-wet unless you really intend to. Hopefully that's helpful, but really it's just a matter of practice! good luck!

Yeah, definitely. Alot of different places around Austria and Germany...not yet adept at creating my own 'scapes (I found that out quick) :/

I definitely reccomend it! It can be very freeing to impose a short time limit and just go.

Very nice for only spending an hour on them. I'd work a little more on lights and darks, and showing that there is a light source. Although the sun can be a very ambient light source.

GAH! Those are beautiful! I love all the colors and the enviting atmospheres they give off. The third one makes me want to sing "THE HIIIIILLS ARE ALIIIIVE WITH THE SOUND OF MUUUUSIIIIC!!!!" at the top of my lungs. I think I could see myself living there. Wonderful, wonderful job. Your watercolors are amazing.
