Description Up in Pennsylvania is what remains of a town called Centralia; it was a major mining magnet until an accident set a whole vein of coal on fire and made the place largely uninhabitable.

This building, which appears to have been some sort of warehouse, was the first thing my girlfriend and I came across when looking for the town.

That's not Centralia. That's lower Byrnesville.

It's within the problem area of the mine fire, so I'd say that the label is close enough. I'd change the title to "Greater Centralia Metropolitan Area - Abandoned building," but it isn't as catchy.

I think that was a building that contained locker rooms and showers for people who worked in the coal mines back in the first half of the 20th century. I feel sorry for the families that were displaced by that mine fire.

You are correct indeed, it was the miner's wash house & warehouse for a small slope mine just across the road in the brush. This is the best time of the year to explore, the the leaves are down and you can see traces of what was there. Good you got this image when you did, the building's been gone a few years now, torn down by local authorities.
