Cool!! Should of had a flashlight or something. My guess it may most likely be an entrance to the sewer system that would have tunnels to the city/towns water supply or something related. Or.... if it was near a cemetery a crypt to store the bodies during the winter so they can bury them in the spring when the ground isn't frozen.
