Here's a scene I've been wanting to draw ever since I recently completed Sonic Adventure 2!The space colony ARK is such a fascinating piece of Sonic's history for me; I'm sure it must be very haunting for Shadow to once again walk the now empty halls of what used to be his childhood home, even with huge fragments of his memory missing...

THAT is one pretty Maria! The hair really looks nice the way you styled it. Seriously one of the cutest Marias I've ever seen. Pretty neat. Shadow is probably on a stool lol.
Gratz on beating SA2. It's one of my favorites. There's still so much to this very day I'm learning about the game. There's a theory about the suggestions in the lore that fans have been noticing just in recent times. It's clearly a detail that's been retconned; the Shadow game established a lot about Shadow's past and it's clear they originally wanted to leave it ambiguous. You may enjoy the theory anyway since it is a totally mind blowing way of looking at Shadow's time with Maria from the context of the game. Sonic is 15 years old, however the events of the tragedy on the Space Colony ARK are said to have happened 50 years ago. Shadow couldn't possibly be a copy of Sonic because he is older than Sonic by several years.

Ever seen in Sonic 3 and Knuckles, this scene? The one where in Angel Island (Knuckles's home and the site of the Master Emerald Shrine), you can see a mural depicting a prophecy of Sonic one day stopping Eggman from abusing the Master Emerald's power?

Considering how Gerald Robotnik based a lot of his creations on things he apparently found at Angel Island, including the Artificial Chaos Research Robots designed after Chaos Zero, the Biolizard appearing to be designed after Perfect Chaos, and the Eclipse Cannon's Core being based on the Master Emerald Shrine, perhaps he designed Shadow after the mural depicting who would one day be the hero to rescue the Master Emerald (which would one day be Sonic).
That's my friend's theory, but given what the games established, it would explain Shadow's similar appearance to Sonic so well without being too farfetched.

The original intent, according to the theory, was that Sonic may have been one of the capsules dropped out of the ARK reawakened at an unknown time with little recollection of his past life. He wouldn't have really known his age per say. (and as far as canon goes I'm not sure if he was declared 15 before Sonic Heroes, the installment after) The two capsules thing was made to be intentionally misleading, but I never really put it together that Sonic could have been one of them until hearing the theory since I grew up with the Shadow game's change in canon. The ending where he says the "sayonara" just like Maria is to lead to to that conjecture that it was a possibility. But yeah, in canon he is 15 now. That wasn't necessarily the case when the game was made, but it's just to bring about another layer to the story anyway.

The game did have some flashback parts. In fact, two of the stages, The Doom, and Lost Impact, were stages set entirely around Shadow having major flashbacks to his life aboard the ARK and with Maria. Very sad stages but good ones.

I really wish there were more detailed flashbacks to Shadow's past, I feel like the entire game as a lot of wasted potential in the storytelling department.

I had flashbacks come back to me instantly from one of my greatest experiences of my childhood, and that was when I played the Shadow the Hedgehog video game. Shadow is one of my most favorite characters in the whole franchise and quite possibly one of my most favorite anti-heroes of all time.Ā

Same here! It was an awesome game and really helped flesh out Shadow more. I really like Shadow a lot, and I wish the series would actually make him more cool and in-character again as opposed to recent portrayals of him (points to stuff like Sonic Boom's portrayal of Shadow, ugh).

Emerl and Cosmo were some other rather Tragic but awesome characters in Sonic. But yeah I like how Shadow is like in that regard.
Or at least what he ONCE WAS like. Lately I think SEGA has really been flanderizing Shadow's character a lot. One of the worst instances being in Sonic Boom where he was just some guy who got angry over a Mixtape and then decided to go on a rampage all because of that.
I blame all those people who just see him as a "Brooding Edgelord" for this.

The game, Shadow the Hedgehog, expanded more on this though. With how Gerald didn't create Shadow all by himself, but had some help from an alien race known as the Black Arms. Certainly not something he would've wanted, but G.U.N. had him seriously pressed for time and he felt he had no other choice. And what does he get in return but those selfish militants shooting up the place and killing Maria?
Also according to Sonic Battle, Emerl was once on the ARK too. He wasn't necessarily something from Gerald, but rather something Gerald found on his expeditions to the ruins (which is apparently where he learned about beings like Chaos and the Master Emerald Shrine), and he then repaired and gave to G.U.N. temporarily as to buy them time with his research. Funny since Emerl is another one of the most tragic anti-heros in the Sonic series too.
This is one of the parts that legit made me cry a lot. Gerald wasn't such a bad scientist overall, but G.U.N. decided to take all his hard work and research from him by force, and it made him hate humanity for that.

These two were some other rather tragic but cool characters in the series. Sadly less popular than Shadow though. What do you think of those two?
