Description Three years old but I dug it up again and felt like I should share it with my Deviantart buddies

This was drawn in response to criticisms about "physics" and "realism" and "durability" in regards to some of my early frame-torso ideas. Basically it represents what the average mecha "fan" considers to be the perfect robot based on 4chan /m/ whining as well as some fanart/official mecha design conventions I saw at the time (people looooove gatling guns and Tachikoma eyes).

Most of this isn't as witty anymore and some of it is inconsistent with my own work. Also it's kind of angry but I feel like there's still truth to it.

And yeah, there's a spelling error.

It also kind of looks like a Tieren.

It's all in jest.

I know you drew this thing as a smartass response to unhelpful criticism but it looks like it'd be cool as fuck properly sketched out.

Do you suppose it is ironic that this is kind of cool? I mean not exactly in a "used by a main protagonist" cool way, but in a "this is what the BBEG needs to send mooks out in when he wants to show the heroes must absolutely crap their pants" sort of way.

Very cool. Got here from TvTropes and was surprised when it dumped me here. I only just signed up a couple days ago and I've never frequented the site much.

The whole thing is too funny. Gotta love them chainguns.

I always thought the mech designs from Zone of Enders made the most sense, even though they look like nothing that would be in our world. Mechs in reality are a horrifyingly boring thing.

The best video game mech designs are probably from Gungriffon, since they were all designed with the intention of being actually possible in real life.

It's always bugged me how people learn about tanks, then conflate the issue of ground pressure, something that is primarily a problem for tracked or wheeled vehicles, with something that walks; the two situations are quite different. To put it in perspective, the largest land animals that ever lived (sauropods) weighed up to 100 tons, yet their feet were only a few feet wide. Tracked vehicles can dig themselves into the ground like a giant dirt chainsaw if their tracks are too narrow, walking things don't have that problem...

you know your my hero. link to an argument i think you should see: [link] they where like, well i think gundam style units are ridiculous, mechawarrior units make perfect logic! and then they try, and utterly fail to convince me as such, while i crush there arguments. so i say, why not go with gundam style, since you now know that mechs in the first place are completely ridiculous. so im going to design a bunch of differnt types, mechawarrior, armored core ish, and gundam ish. deal wiht it.

Uchikoma In reply to pentecil [2010-01-23 04:08:32 +0000 UTC]

Depends. If the missiles are verical launch types, then they gain coolness and functionality points for being omni-directional... though in UC gundam-verse they would be completely ineffective

I think this is what's called a "Spider Tank" type of mech...
It isn't? Well it should.. Despie it only has half the legs of a spider, unless it has 4 other extended "limbs" (gatlng guns work!) then it's a spider mech!

ONB-6 [2009-03-07 15:14:53 +0000 UTC]

Shit, it does look like something from the People's Reform League, doesn't it? Looks like it was designed by a pack of tasteless Communists. Really says something about /m/, doesn't it?

Really, it's kind of an uncanny valley thing with giant robots, isn't it? The more realistic they become, the more you wonder why they bother with something so ostentatious when a main battle tank would be just as good.

Personally, I think in a wierd way G Gundam had the most realistic mechs. After all, if you're not using a motion capture interface, why bother with a humanoid design in the first place?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Nidaram In reply to ONB-6 [2009-03-25 00:39:26 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, all giant robots are unrealistic and "realism" is still at best a design convention and style trend (even in Gasaraki, FLAG, etc.).

So you might as well have fun with it!

lol! I totally agree with the gatling guns.
I'm amazed at the number of times I had to explain to my friends or co-workers that gatling guns _suck_.
Not because they are inherently lame--they're actually incredibly awesome in their pure function.
Gatling guns suck because they are the default "superprojectileweapon", tainted by so many thoughtless creature, character, and vehicle designs. Need a meaner zombie nazi? Add a gatling gun. Need your anthro wolf cyborg to be more badass? Make one of his hands a gatling.
Is your camaro kinda boring? Add two gatlings! And remember, gatlings don't need ammo boxes or anything. The barrels do all the work

Then we shall replace ammo boxes with capacitors, a miniature nuclear reactor, and/or disposable charge boxes to facilitate the power drain of sufficiently powerful laser weapons.
