Depending on perspective, the best days of my life have both passed and are yet to come. But just over six days of exploring a wintry and mysterious European city with bouts of sightseeing, shopping, unrelenting sex, and dining out with the one I love encourages me to rule in favor of the former. At least for now.

Saying goodbye was the hardest part; the bitter end to a sweet time. A week in Latvia with the girl I love culminated when she stepped onto a bus to catch her train home. It was the first time we separated the whole week. I formed a heart shape with my hands just before I saw her start to cry as the bus took off. I watched it completely helplessly until the taillights disappeared over the hill. My flight home was first thing in the morning. Going back to the hotel room for the first time without her was one of the hardest things I had to endure.

The taxi ride to the airport was nothing short of somber. The streets of Riga, still brightened by Christmas lights and decorations, were completely quiet. The only sound was a song called "Hazard" by Richard Marx playing on the cab's radio. I hadn't heard it before. It was about a man who lost a girl he loved under mysterious circumstances, and blamed for her disappearance. It made me tear up. It was a reminder of how temporary everything is. I always worried about her. I worried about her health and her safety. It captured the moment.
