Description Volunteer Amanda poses with arctic wolf storm.
While there is a human in this photo interacting with a wolf the human has been trained on how to interact with this animal and there is still a risk of misunderstanding between wolf and human. Wolves and wolf dogs are wild animals, not pets.

It takes a long time to build a relationship like that with a wolf, but it sure is worth it! Thanks!

Thank you he is beautiful, but certainly not a pet. These animals are wild, through and through. And while you can sometimes have a relationship with one that is special they are still wild and unpredictable. Out in his own territory this guy is relaxed and ok with attention but in a house or more captive setting he'd be downright scary. I completely understand the allure of having one, though. You just have to realize that they would be much happier in a wild setting and you can still help and take care of them by sponsoring a wolf or wolf dog. Check out this website to learn more and help out. [link] Thanks for the interest!

But what if you raise a wolf right after it was born? Bottle feeding it, and bringing it up just like a dog. I'm sure it'll act just like one in certain ways, once full grown. Just more vicious. Tame dogs now, used to be wild like wolves hundreds of years ago.

Nieme In reply to peppermintpaws [2008-02-17 19:25:52 +0000 UTC]

You're right in some ways. You can potentially bottle raise a wolf to be social but its never guaranteed and even if the wolf loves you there will always be conflict with space and dominance and that's when people and wolves get really hurt. It's much better for both parties to give each other respect from a distance. We did indeed get dogs from wolves, and now that we have them, why do we need to keep going back to the source? We should be happy with the hundreds of dog breeds we produced, we humans just have this urge to own and tame everything and we need to learn that it isn't always the right choice for us, the animal, or the world.

I know. When I was little I wanted a tiger. xD Having exotic animals brings jealousy to others, and people thrive for other to be jealous of them. Not only is that why we want wolves, but if someone broke into your house, a wolf would be a better and maybe more loyal than an average dog. Plus if the person who broke into your house was a killer, a knife would bring the wolf down to easily.

I know this is an old comment, but I just wanted to point out that wolves typically make poor guard animals because they're so timid by nature and they don't bark. Better off with a German Shepherd

Yeah, it wouldn't be right to put any animal through that even if they seemed happy.

peppermintpaws In reply to Nieme [2008-02-18 23:10:42 +0000 UTC]

That's true but that right there is the reason most people around here get big dogs.
I like big dogs for that reason, and because they are more fun then little ones. I want a German Shepard because they are loyal, smart, and will protect you from any danger.
I was hiding behind a bush at a church when the cops were after me (Out past curfew. ) And my deceased dog was there, Rock. He smelt how scared I was and started growling at the cop and wouldn't let him get too close. When the cop would get a bit closer, Rock would snap at him, and was warning him. My mom called the cops for my dog missing, and the cops were trying to get my dog. I didn't know that because I was with my friend and my dog was never on a chain, so when I walked by my house he started following me.
Anyways, the cop called my mom and said my dog was being aggressive, so the cop left and went back to my house. And me and my friend took off running. He was there too protect me, and that sort of changed my thought of canines.

Wow. What a gorgeous creature! This wolf looks a lot like my character Snowcap. ^_^

I agree: wolves are wild animals and shouldn't be treated as domesticated dogs. They have a language of their own and could easily take a human action for a threat. I really dislike people that think they can approach any animal and immediately have a good connection with them. When I see deer in my meadow, sure, I approach them slowly, but when I reach a certain distance, I stop and sit to only observe.

Great photograph! How I wish I could volunteer...
