The fog that morning covered the ground in shadow, while the sun appeared over it but didn't cast any light directly; it was actually quite dim and made no difference to the exposure whether it was in or out of the frame. The fog was lit by the blue sky, hence the forbidding air to it! The Ultramax 400 seems quite good at such pictures.
