“Oh, don’t worry.” The man said, noticing that I had seen his axes “I’m not here to kill you. If I wanted to do that, I would have just left you in the desert.”
I decided to ignore what may have been his attempt at comforting me on the basis that he might not be all that good at the whole ‘comforting’ role.
“ Pardon my rudeness,” the man said again, waving his gloved hands – for I finally noticed he had bright blue gloves on his hands – “I am Giri Gaijin-Gaikokujin, Gaijin-Kami Elder’s Right hand, Master Warrior 1st class.”
None of that made any sense to me. I assumed that his name was Giri Gai-however you pronounce it, but anything after that made little sense. I decided that, since his name was a little to hard for me to pronounce (and spell) I would simply call him Blue, after his colour of choice.
“You do not speak” Blue continued, concern in his voice, which surprised me a little – I wasn’t used to concern from anyone. “Is this by choice, or has the desert rendered you mute through the lack of water?”
Water. One of the few things I had seen in my life in the mines, all the water I had ever known was dirty, unfiltered stuff. But sometimes we dug up underground oasis’s in our digging, and it was quite a site – pure, crystal-clear light blue water, slowly moving around in a deep pit which was located inside a underground ‘ pocket’ caves. We never did figure out how they got there in the first place.
“Sorry.” I said, apologising for my silence – when my throat started to hurt. It was pretty hoarse and dry right now, and my voice along with it.
“I thought as much.” Blue said, and, beckoning behind himself to someone out of my sight – and in his hand, that person handed to him a small wooden cup-like thing. Blue then approached me, and offered it – respectfully, I might add – to me. I looked inside it and saw the same crystal clear water I had ever so really seen. I took it cautiously, than sipped it a little – instantly soothing my pains in its cold nourishment. It had been a while since I had had something like this.
“Thank you.” I said respectfully, my voice returning to normal.
“Such manners” Blue said, slightly taken aback “I have not seen them used by anyone outside our Tribe, at least, not anymore. Where do you come from?”
I proceeded to tell him about the mines – all the general stuff I had done, accompanied by painful flashbacks while I was describing my pain – our pain. When I had finished, Blue looked grim. I didn’t blame him – he probably had no idea that we were there, in such conditions.
“So…” Blue said, mainly to himself, in a shocked tone “those Industrialist scum would sink this low, would they?”
“Excuse me,” I said hesitantly, not sure if this was the time and place “but what’s an ‘Industrialist’?”
