Description plz don't zoom in y'all.

Featuring my MYO entry Maria, and Astreus owned by I-xXTheBlackCatXx-I . I spent approximately 6-7 hours on this illustration in GIMP2.8. I gave up on the floor. Detailing Arseus was fun too.

The sunlight glared into the youth's eyes. She brought a paw over her eyes to shield them. The youth much preferred the transitional periods - dawn and dusk, to the harshness of the sun or the shivering cold of the night. Not only were the temperatures much more pleasant, but the people were too. At dusk, she might be able to beg for some dinner scraps as most woolynes were just finishing theirs. It was also then that the garbage bins were filled with unwanted leftovers, hers for the taking.

She wedged herself deeper into the shade provided by the edge of the roof of the little house. The afternoon sun was blaring down at her, but she didn't want to move for there was a throng of woolynes along the street beside it. After a few hours when the throng disperses, there'd be plenty of half eaten food carelessly thrown away. If she was early, and she was prepared to be, then she'd have a good meal tonight.

Suddenly a voice separated itself from what had become white noise.

"Oh hello there", spoke a light blue woolyne with orange hair. The youth stared back, unnerved. Thousands of these other woolynes walked past her, every day. It was unusual for one to notice her, and even then, this was one of the first times on spoke to her.

"Hi" croaked the youth. She wasn't used to speaking. She was used to scavenging and sleeping and hiding. Not many paid much attention to her. But this one woolyne had and she was unsure of how to react.

"How're you doing?" the newcomer said, crouching down. "Where are your parents?"

The youth shrunk down even further, if that was possible. This word was unfamiliar to her, 'parents'. She spoke occasionally with a few other youths on the street, but none of them mentioned 'parents'. They mostly spoke of where to easily get food, and where to get good lodgings.

"None", whispered the youth. "I don't know."

"No parents?" spoke the newcomer incredulously. He took a step back, finally taking in the youth's disheveled appearance. Her hair was ragged, it looked like it had never been combed in years. Her nails, some were long some where short, they did not receive regular cuttings. Dark fur was matted, taking on the temporary appearance of clothing, but upon further inspection was caked with mud. No, this was not a child who had parents. Good parents, at least. Nevertheless, the newcomer had a kind heart and persisted.

"Well why don't you come with me?" He said, kneeling again, and holding out a hand. "I can get you some good food as well."

At the mention of food, the youth's ears twitched. That word was extremely familiar to her, and lured by it's prospect she chose to trust the newcomer. It wasn't like she had anything to loose anyways.

Maria squinted her eyes at the morning sun, rising over her little ranch. Ever since she had moved here she had gotten up early, before the sun became too harsh. She was just finishing up tending to her crops and was ready to go in to relax a bit. The flowers near a large deciduous tree were a bright orange. They reminded of the hair of another woolyne who had helped her, a long time ago.

The woolyne who found her, introduced himself as Astreus, and took her to an orphanage. The orphanage wasn't an unkind place, they had given her food, given her neat clothes and a wash, and they had even given her a name, Maria. They estimated for her to be 8, with a birthday in the fall months.

The only thing they did not give her, was a home.

After years on the streets, the orphanage was unfamiliar to her. In time they had taught her to read and write, as well as a little math and science. But they could not cure her shyness. Many of the other woolyne orphans, were there since they were young. They were used to cleaning up for potential parents, smiling and showing off. Maria was not. Maybe that was the reason why she was never adopted. She was always filching food, shying away. The kind stranger Astreus visited her a few times, but he didn't seem to be in the situation to adopt. So after a few visits with a cookie tucked into his pocket, she never saw him again.

So when she had turned 18, and the legal system declared her an adult, she saved up her money and moved out into the wilderness. Not at first, mind you, she worked multiple jobs and saved up as best as she could. Then when she had enough money, she purchased a plot of land in the countryside and started her ranch.

She had come to detest, living at the orphanage near the end. It was just very cramped, there were many diseases (her time on the street gave her a good enough immune system), there was so much talking talking talking talking. The other orphans seemed to take solace in groups, however Maria much preferred the solitude of her own company. This left her an easy target for bullies.

So you could say it was an acquired distaste.

And so she moved out here, where she could be alone and answer to only herself. The turned the handle on the door knob to her little shack. Maria decided to prepare herself a drink, then nap in the warm morning sun. She felt a remaining trace of wind in her fur, then the call of a Drakern on the wind.
