Description Here's my second occupant for the hand-hewn barn beam (first can be seen here: fav.me/db4jtfp ), and here it is in it's intended destination.Β  I recently learned that gargoyles are only the sculptures which divert rainwater, all else are 'grotesques'.Β  I tried a darker finish with this one, first with a walnut alcohol stain then a tinted oil, then wax.

Nice! I like the 'solidity' of the form, it very much is based on the nature of wood as the material. I like the coloring too, it seems to make it easier to study the form.. as well as taking the fresh cut look away. It seems aged now and probably looks better with the old wood?

Β Β  With each piece I am doing a little experimentation with the finish, I was curious how the wood would react to a much darker finish.Β  The crazy grain can't be eliminated because of the very porous section, but I think it does help in reading forms and details better because the competing pattern is a bit subdued.

Thanks Joe!Β  I have a lot of plans for that place, lots of carving and even some stained glass.Β  It's the first opportunity I've had to be able to modify a home and make it to my liking, so it's pretty exciting.
