Leon Scott Kennedy had no problem to admit when he wasn’t really good at something and when he trained Claire Redfield he realized after the first shooting, that Claire’s results on the long distance – with the sniper rifle – were way better than his own. While the government agent could outshoot everyone – even the guys of the BSAA – on short distance, his aim was off when it came to long distance shots and that wasn’t because of the weapon. So Leon started to look for a different instructor for Claire, who could train her on the sniper-rifle because what should he teach her, when she was better than him already. And since Kennedy trained his girlfriend in the BSAA-base her brother was stationed in, he found the fitting replacement for himself in a very short amount of time. Chris’ second in command – Piers Nivans was a marksman per excellance. While Leon had been able to wrestle him down in close combat, they had been equal on short distance shootings but on the long distance Nivans had wiped the floor with Leon. Who would be better to teach Claire than Piers? And now Claire was waiting on the corridor for her big brother, his second in command and for Leon who would be too late, because he hadn’t been able to leave the White House in time because of a conference.
“Claire!”
The young Redfield turned around when she heard her brother calling her name and a smile appeared on her face, before she made a step towards him and wrapped him into her arms for a brief hug. But Chris didn’t get very far, because the moment he wanted to say something, the mobile in his pants began to ring and after he had checked the display he disappeared with rolling eyes, leaving Claire and Piers alone in the corridor.
Piers Nivans turned to Claire the moment Chris was out of earshot. “You haven’t told him, that we met already before this huge meeting lately?” he asked.
“Of course not,” Claire replied. “You asked me to keep our contact secret and that I did." Claire Redfield and Piers Nivans had met a year before, when Claire had been waiting for Chris in the corridor to pick him up for a little family-dinner. Piers had asked her if she had lost orientation in the huge building and they had started a small conversation about the BSAA, TerraSave and if they could work together somehow. After that, they had stayed in contact and Claire had agreed to visit Chris’ team shortly before the incident on the island happened. Chris had asked her for that favor. The men had been surprised at first, but then they had behaved like a bunch of school boys. While Chris and Piers had been embarrassed Claire found the whole situation highly amusing. But it was good that she had visited and spoken with them. It was a win/win for both sides.
“But you did tell your boyfriend?”
“Yeah, cause this would have been too awarkward,” Claire grinned. “Especially since he could kick your ass!”
A smug grin appeared on Piers expressionless face. “He could?”
Claire crossed her arms in front of her chest, tapped her chin with her finger and then her smile became a grin – a grin like that of a cat, which had just caught a bird. “Thinking about it – he did already!”
Piers’ eyes started to widen and his own grin began to loopside. “He did?” he repeated. “Oh boy, don’t tell me your boyfriend...”
“... is actually standing right behind you,” a male voice completed the sentence and Piers threw himself around like a dog, that had been stepped on the tail. Leon Scott Kennedy stood there and the grin on his face matched that of Claire.
“Geez,” Piers snorted before he turned back to Claire. “Does your brother know about the two of you?”
Claire laughed. “Of course – he was the first we told it, following the advice: Attack is the best defense!”
“You two are crazy!” Piers shook his head, then he motioned them to follow him to the shooting range, where he showed Claire the locker-rooms of the women before he went with Leon to the armory to get the rifle. While he was taking a look at the rifles, he looked over his shoulder. “Leon? How is she really? I haven’t talked to her since she has returned and I doubt I can say how she is doing – I don’t know her well enough for that,” Piers said and the worry in his voice was evident. "But I know that she is not completely alright."
Leon sighed, while he watched Piers preparing the rifle. "This whole thing won't be over, until we know if Moira is still alive and until she is back home safe and sound. Until then the guilt will rip Claire apart, no matter what Chris or I will do. Barry isn't blaming her for what happened - she is just always blaming herself."
"Can I help in some way?" Piers asked.
For a moment Leon was silent and his face frowned in concentration. "I want you to teach Claire something," he said slowly. "Something specific... call it my a sixth sense... Teach her to shoot on moving targets..."
"Okay..."
"... from a helicopter!"
"What?" Piers shook his head. "No, no, no, no, no – I can't – she can't do that! That's too difficult!"
A honest smile appeared on Leon's face. "Do it," he said. "Red will surprise you!"
