I love this piece and the idea behind it, but the description caught my attention.

My idea was that the purpose of the kelpie looking like a horse was to fool you into believing it wasn't a kelpie.

this is really really cool i am glad to find such amazing art of one of my favorite mythical species Β
i have lived part of my life in Scotland, from the version of the kelpies there; they are meant to use the horse appearance to lure humans but have a different form the rest of the time. but the descriptions and stories change from region to region. anyhow i love your interpretation, it is nice to see this less well known mythic species getting some attention i wonder what your interpretation on a selkie would be

Nigreda In reply to draggon-rider2 [2016-01-28 15:49:57 +0000 UTC]

Thank you

The kelpie really isnΒ΄t that well known, although itΒ΄s one of my many favorite creatures. I will probably do another version of it in the future. I have heard of the selkie before but honestly I had to look up the specifics. ItΒ΄s a fascinating beast. I put in on my to design creatures list When I get the time I will take it on. Thanks for the input!

Viking horses, fjords and such, they are not as picky about terrain as the warm blooded/European/Spanish lines. They are a bit more like mongolian ponies... Which will walk through anything forever. I always wondered if that is where the legends came from.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Nigreda In reply to SwitchetO [2015-07-07 19:56:38 +0000 UTC]

True, I have always loved riding island horses! Untiring, tough and so fluffy in winter.<3 If they trust you they will walk through anything as you say but still no horse really likes deep mud.^^ I can definitely imagine them to be one of the origins of the kelpie legend.

I think when you walk along the shore of a river or fiord and all of a sudden out of the fog comes a herd of horses swimming through the water to your side, that must be one picture youΒ΄ll never forget.

The monster is amazing, with suberb artwork and stunning coloring! Β  But the KelpieΒ΄s look make me think on the Asian dragons,or something like that.

Thank you True in asian mythology most creatures have scales ... it has some resemblens with a kirin maybe. Hm ... I think i will do a kirin some time!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

TanukiTagawa In reply to Nigreda [2015-07-08 03:53:04 +0000 UTC]

Among the Asian folklore monsters,Kirin is a very curious one. Many people think that it like a unicorn image.wikifoundry.com/image/1/… However, ancient Chinese statues also show the kirin with a draconic look www.dontpaniconline.com/media/… Choose your favourite!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Nigreda In reply to TanukiTagawa [2015-07-08 08:44:42 +0000 UTC]

Yes, since both our unicorn and the kirin are associated with luck and good things, I think itΒ΄s not that wrong to say the kirin is the asian equivalent to our unicorn.

I prefer the one "horned" version. I have always found the idea of it having a single antler very fascinating; I have never found this in any other creature.

Although I think the draconic version is the ancient one. From what IΒ΄ve read a famous chinese sailor brought a giraffe back from Africa ages ago as a present for his emperor. Ever since then the kirins look changed towards the one horned version since the gentle giraffe was thought to be a kirin. Well gentle unless they feel like decapitating you through striking with their front legs.
