Description I've recently been awarded the Icelandic Dettifoss Clan by the illustrious and magnificent , leader of the Gargoyles Aquatic group (Here--> gargoylesaquatic.deviantart.co… As such, it was my duty to create clan leaders and followers, some of which were required to be aquatic (per the group's stipulations) PLEASE NOTE: I'm a old lady with work responsibilities and limited time, so alas, I did what I could in the time I was given; I know these look a bit rough, but you get the idea More to come eventually, but until then consider this "Round One".

The Detifoss clan is described as follows (other than some minor corrections and filigree provided by yours truly, this is basically the description as provided by , for which I cannot claim creative credit! )

" The members of this elusive clan hide in a cave located within the magnificent Dettifoss Falls, unknown to humans as it is nearly impossible for them to gain access without drowning or sustaining serious injuries. The entrance of this cave --no bigger than a large car--lies within the falls, yet the cave inside is vast and sports a deep lake as well as a tunnel which connects directly to the neighboring river. The members of the clan don't limit themselves to the confines of the cave; they also go outside to the surrounding forests and into the river for various reasons, mainly to hunt, breath fresh air and cure boredom. They don’t care much hiding for humans, but they rarely allow themselves to be seen, save for a few trusted individuals. "

Like the humans of Iceland, many of them members hail from Nordic heritage; the members of Dettifoss are primarily the descendants of European transplants (predominantly Nords and Irish), though indigenous Icelandic gargoyles are rumored to exist (will link to these when artist is finished) Members display characteristics not unlike most European gargoyles.

Members depicted here (in no particular order):

Sigdis, the leader-- Sigdis is an older, seasoned gargess who takes her role as leader very seriously. She is all too aware the dangers humans--and other creatures-- can pose, as her missing right eye can attest. Sigdis often comes off as gruff and forward to those whom she is encountering for the first time, but is quick to warm to those she trusts and even displays a friendly, playful side (downplayed though it may be). She is a master swordswoman and an accomplished fist-fighter, besting even her stronger male foes. Sigdis' physical features include her missing right eye, bull-like horns and exaggerated knee and elbow caps, as well as her unusual dark-blue coloring and a diamond-tipped tail.

Hof, an aquatic Gargoyle and co-commander --Hof , though younger than Sigdis, possesses a maturity and cunning that has allowed him to climb the ranks of the clan depsite his age. Sigids and he often discuss strategy, weaponry and politics, and are quite good friends. Hof is very wary and often over analytical, and prefers the company of books (or his axe) to that of most gargoyles, save for his beloved mate Margret. Hof is beaked and fancifully finned, with webbed toes and a long paddle-like tail which assists in his skillful swimming. He Is primarily in charge of aquatic matter whereas Sigdis handles land and sky problems.

Margret, an aquatic gargoyle and renowned cook -- Margret is Hof's mate and certainly the yin to his yang; she is easy-going and friendly whereas he can be withdrawn and moody. She can often be found playing with clan children and is well loved by all for her food, particularly her "fiskur" stew. She possesses many characteristics similar to that of a dolphin, webbed feet and bluish-grey skin.

The Gudlaug, a well-loved nanny-- Known simply as "Gudlaug", literally "Goodwife", this elderly gargoyle tends all eggs and children as though they were her very own. There isn't a Gargoyle in Dettifoss that has anything but the utmost love for this portly pedagogue. But don't let her grandmotherly appearance fool you into thinking she is weak: it is rumored that she takes much care in her eggs because her guilt compels her to atone for the atrocities she has committed in her youth, of which she will never speak. Gudlaug has low-hung, outward facing bull-like horns, multi-fingered wings and a soft green hue.

Gulurbyrn, the "Golden Warrior"--though focused and fierce in battle, Gulurbyrn (or simply "Gulur") spends the bulk of his time talking to and joking around with other clan members. The largest and strongest of the group members, Gulur is always willing to help out around the Dettifoss territory, especially if mead is in the general vicinity! Gulur's friendly personality is known throughout the clan, and it is rumored that he has even made friends with local humans (though he has yet to confess to it). His Mate, Isblom, refuses to comment on the matter. Gulur is a heraldic bear-like gargoyle noted for his blonde hair and "golden" wings.

Isblom, the spy-- Isblom or "Iceflower" is the clan's primary reconnaissance expert; when in the rare event contact with the human is needed, Isblom is on the forefront of such missions . Her white fur and brown wings allow her blend in better with the surroundings than most gargoyles, and she is particularly stealthy with her fox feet and owl feathers. Isblom is also a renowned linguist, and will often tutor other gargoyles in reading and languages in her spare time. She is Gulur's mate and like him is generally playful and friendly as well, though to a lesser extent than her mate.

*PHEW* Ok I think that's about it. I'm sure I'll be editing this like a mo'fo', but that'll do for now

You're absolutely welcome, Evollusive.

I actually tried to make a biography reference for my Irish Gargoyle clan: The Slieveanorra  clan.   Here is the journal entry that has their information: fav.me/d5r4yw0   Sorry, that's so short.

WOW LNT, your gargoyles sound great! Love that they're satyr/glaistig-esque; very appropriate considering their heritage! Any plans to draw them up?

Thank you.  When I trying come up with their clan name, I had to dig deep while researching famous Ireland forests on Wiikipedia, and it worked out in the end.

Well, I have gargoyle character up, her name is Eclipse Lomond.  Here is the link to part of my gallery that includes all of the picture that I made of Eclipse.  lonelynightrain.deviantart.com…

Thank you!  I really need to draw an updated version of her... However it's been so long that I've drawn ANY Gargoyles I've lost my grip on drawing them.

Awww I doubt you've "lost your grip" as you say; I think it's a lot like riding a bike: once you get back on you'll remember how to do it! I think an updated version of your gargoyle would be excellent!

Thank you, I'm glad that you think so anyway.    Man, I have whole bunch of drawings of Gargoyles that I drew while I was in high school that I would really like to scane and post to my gallery right now.  It's too bad that my friend still has them with her.

I will make sure that I'll do that!  The only thing is though is that my friend is married now and we both live in different counties (I think) from each other and we rarely call each too because we're so busy.

This elderly female is beautiful. Biut the wolf and the bear Garg just take the "resemble" (animals in this case) thing too far once again. Everyone is doing it like this. Everyone. I don't know why.

Hey thanks! I'm glad you like my elderly female! (Don't tell anyone, but she's secretly my favorite too! ) As far as the animal gargoyles are concerned, I agree with you: just throwing in a random anthromorphized creature with wings and calling it a "gargoyle" isn't really really fair. However, I will say this in my defense:1) Real gargoyles often are real animals or composites of real animals (here's a winged wolf in Croatia[link] ) 2) The animals I chose were animals that figure prominently in Norse mythology; I chose a fox and bear because these creatures are in carvings, stories and artwork, etc, and they held value in Norse society 3) In the Gargoyle Universe, these heraldic gargs aren't uncommon; Leo, Una, and Raven and his "clan" (seen here as a wolf, bear, and eagle gargoyles --> [link] )are prime examples. So, there ya go, just felt I needed to play Devil's advocate there for a moment. And once again, I AGREE with you; "random animal person with wings" does not necessarily equate a gargoyle!

Um, thanks for the long reply.
I know the London Gargoyles "resemble" "heraldic" "animals". Have a look at my gallery to see what "resemble" means.... many people don't get this word, apparently. It means that a Gargate/Gargate has, by chance, some features that remind humans of a certain being/animal. Nothing more. These features can also be mixed in every possible way.
Raven's clan doesn't count because these are a Child of Oberon and his Totem Beasts. Grandmother clearly states that the Totem Poles are not Gargoyles but the ancestors, and that Gargoyles never lived on Queen Florence Island.
Also, people need to think about what Gargoyles are and what Children of Oberon are (like Gods and mythological beings!) before drawing something that "looks kawaii" and such. Kitty-cat Gargoyles anyone? *facepalm*

But thanks for agreeing with me, overall. I'm always glad to have a good discussion, and although I'm a canon nazi, that doesn't make me a troll. XD

YAY! So slad you like him; he's hands-down my favorite design-wise I tried to stay clear of everything we normally associate with aquatic humanoids and instead gave him a beak, fins and yellow skin...and somehow it worked!

«I did what I could in the time I was given; I know these look a bit rough (...)»

Bit rough?! This looks amazing. No! This is stunning. And I mean in all aspects: anatomy, poses and especially design, I just love your colours palette in every single one of them. You, my dear friend, did a stunning job. I bow before you . You made me jealous of your fantastic skills.
I like your re-creation of the clan. Is yours to take and modify on your will.

About the characters:
Gosh! How, and who, to even start: Isblom and Gudlaugh are by far my favourites. Gulurbyrn, the way you drawn him, looks great. The aquatic gargoyles, love the idea of a beaked aquatic gargoyles: love it. And Sigdis, she reminds me of Orin, which is awesome. You did marvelous in all of them, not only the design,, but their written as well

Congratz of such marvelous work.
Now, I'm super jealous of your fantastic skills xD
