Description Bam, 1 down...4 to go. This is Wishbone, commissioned by a fellow student. I don't know the dog personally, but it definitely is one cute little bugger if you ask me... This is an 11x14 portrait done all with an itty bitty mechanical pencil (my friend) that took me at least a month or two to finish, though I didn't make note of the exact length of time (I have to start doing that). The person who commissioned it was very nice and didn't push for time restraints at all, which I am very thankful for, especially because of the carpload of projects my teachers had loaded me up with in the past few weeks. I am not sure if it is completely finished yet, which is why I'm posting it up here for my trusty critiquers to examine If you guys see anything that needs changing (that is possible to do...something like adjusting the placement of an eye would be impossible) don't hesitate to bring it up! I think I need to darken that right ear and the left part of the body (the dog's chest is covered in fluff, not fat). Some things may be a teensy bit off as I edited the picture a bit (changed the direction of the dog's gaze) and a couple of other minor details. Do critique all you want!

I don't know if you intended to do that but right over the collar on the left side, under the ear of the dog, it looks like a blob of flesh hanging down. I also think that the dog is missing the figure of the body. It may be there but its hard to tell. It really doesn't show the form clearly for it to look like the body of the dog. Also I wanted to ask that did you draw each fur individualy? Everthing looks so perfect and real.

Yeah, the body was my main concern, because the way the fur puffs out on the chest it lost a lot of muscle definition (looked much like a large blob in the photograph too) and I wasn't sure how to keep it poofy looking while showing more body form. Iono, that got me stuck. And the fur above the collar was also there in the picture, I think it's just a big fluff ball hanging down cause he's got longer fur on his neck. I might try to add some shading to fix those things though, but I don't know how much it will affect it. Yeah I do draw every hair individually...that's why it takes so darned long It's a pain in the arsenal, but it looks the best in the end.

I don't think I can see anything wrong with this... every detail is awesome and so much life/character. I can't seem to be able to get this kind of quality out of mechanical pencil which bothers me, but then it is only a cheapo one I "borowed" from work.
This is how good I wanna be when I grow up. *faves*

. . . isn't this the retarded looking dog? The one where one eye goes one way while the other is crossing the street in the opposite direction?

. . . just checking.

I must agree with everyone else. This is brilliant.
What medium? It looks to be charcoal from a thumbnail but the clarity makes me think mechanical pencil..am I right? Wow. Just amazing. Congrats on executing yet another fine piece. :3

Oh wow! That's absolutely amazing, the texture in the fur in particular. The eyes are beautifully expressive as well.

The picture is absolutely stunning! The detail of the piece is just remarkable. I'm really impressed by how well you were able to catch the texture of the fur, that tends to be hard to do in a drawing. The only thing I'd be concerned about was the width of the body, it seems as though the dog is a blob after its neck, but I'm sure that's just the way it was laying down or whatever. ^_^

nikkiburr In reply to Aurora-chan [2005-05-03 22:05:11 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I was very concerned with that too...I really should have cropped the picture differently to prevent that from happening. It's like that in the picture too, but not as noticeable because you can see more of the dog's body (the legs become visible right below the cutoff of the drawing). That was my bad entirely, and I don't really know how to fix it. *sigh* I guess I know what NOT to do next time...I need to plan stuff more betterly.

I don't think it has anything to do with the way you planned it, it's just how the dog was laying at the time.
