Description This is the final version of the coyote still life in my scraps (can be seen here: [link] ).

It's a combination of both hard ground etching (described in the link above), and aqua-tint, which is what gives it the gradients in shade. It's my yote pelt, yote skull, chipmunk pelt, and mink pelt, all sitting on my tv. Cobra skin is on the wall.

I really like how this one came out...I spent hours on the hard ground bit, but I think it was worth it

This piece won 2nd place in the 2008 Blanche Ames National Juried Art Exhibition, which was an incredible honor! Especially considering the competition.

Fantastic etching. I really like the detail you put in the hard ground etching while the aquatint gives it more depth. The whole thing has a somewhat sinister beauty in it. The bow (?) in the bottom left corner adds some nice contrast to the dark subject matter. The composition is very nice too. The snake skin in the back really brings all the elements together. I'm glad the tv isn't recognizable, I think it would have thrown the whole "feel" of the piece off.

Ha, another rare owner of a chipmunk pelt. I have to ask, did you skin and preserve yours yourself? I recently skinned and tanned one after a cat had gotten through with it and he turned out to be an attractive little pelt.

Do you know why chipmunk pelts are so few and far between? I haven't seen any on eBay and Google isn't even coming up with anything. I've seen numerous squirrel pelts for sale and even thirteen lined ground squirrels but no chipmunks. I am perplexed.

Yep, did it all myself I get most of mine from my cat...some roadkills.

I dunno why they're not common...but I'd guess size. People like big things they can pet LOL. I really like the chippy stripes though and heck I love mouse pelts too so I do kinda tend to like the little guys in general. I guess chipmunks are not hunted so much as squirrels too, and that's probably where they get their pelts from mostly. Chippies are considerably smaller than squirrels and they would have to trap them whereas I think a lot of squirrels are shot :\

That's a good point. Funny thing is though, I've seen thirteen lined ground squirrels being sold, as well as tiny little ermines which are fairly common. I really want one of the ground squirrels and might purchase one of the little guys for myself next time I see one for sale.

Aye, ground squirrels are considered pests (they "ruin" land) I believe and are hunted partially for that reason - and if they can get a profit from selling the pelts then most folks will try it. Ermines are valued as furbearers cause they've got great coats. Chipmunks are neither a pest nor do they have "quality" fur - and as such not particularly sought after. At least that'd be my guess

It sort of looks like the Coyote was just sitting when his skull fell out.
It looks simply brilliant; you're amazing.

I see no problem in managed and humane killing of a species of animal that is in excess for furs or skulls.
What I do have a massive problem with is when friends hop in a truck go out spot lighting and shoot 20 or 30 of these animals in an evening with little concern for the carcass all for kicks and giggles.

Anyone who is going out to hunt should do so with a reverence for nature and respect the animal they are shooting.

how could you stand so many dead animals in your house?! I can understand so many live animals, trust me i know, and I dont give a shit about most humans dying, but ANIMALS? Specially a coyote pelt and skull?! Where is the love?

The love is right there in front of you. Different people show it in different ways. I didn't kill these animals, and would never do such a thing, but I do keep artifacts of animals I love because it is a way, for me, of honoring their beauty. Have you ever studied a skull before? It is truly a work of art. The curving lines of the various surfaces, the jagged silhouette of the teeth...my fox skull, if you look real close at the top of the skull there are thousands of little rivets that run and swirl across the surface looking for all the world like winding rivers on a map. I keep these things because there is so much wonder to them. They are beautiful parts of the animals I love and in keeping them I am showing my appreciation. My opinion

This picture reminds me a lot of illustrations from old books that I have. Just the effect that it creates. Don't worry, I don't know what I'm talking about either. ^^

But, I like it, nevertheless. xD
