Description Not one of mine. It's public domain clipart, uploaded purely because I've been thinking for a while about a dA avatar.

I don't want to use one of my character images, because I don't want to get my fictional characters confused with me as an author in anyone's mind.

And then I thought of the yin-yang symbol. That's always had an appeal for me: hot/cold, male/female, hard/soft, reason/emotion - whatever pair of opposites you can think of, yin-yang offers balance and harmony.

And a google search for public domain yin-yang iimages brought this up.

I love trees and woodland. Ancient woodland, or well-managed native woodland. Not for carbon sinks or eco-reasons (most of the tree-planting schemes are well-meaning con-jobs - 5 years' management for a crop that takes 60-100 years to harvest? CON JOB! Most of them will die within 10 years. It's like promising people you'll plant wheat for them and look after it for a couple of weeks. It takes decades of management to raise a healthy wood on a small island like Britain, and that only comes with treating trees as a crop. The key is sustainability: if I plan on cutting down a 60-year-old tree, I should plan on planting a new one and having it looked after for the next 60 years.)

And my search found this. A deciduous parkland standard, well managed, with good roots, and a bird to show how well-managed woodland encourages wildlife.

I'm good with this. Yin-yang plus some. That's me.

So this is my new dA ID and my avatar.

And if anyone wants to know more about responsible woodland management, just ask. It does involve cutting down trees and using their timber. It involves rotation coppicing, sustainable charcoaling, and wise planting. It does not involve mass planting of junk pine forests or eco-firms sticking huge numbers of saplings on brownfield sites because they got a European grant.

I've only gotten to know you recently and yet when I saw this it felt so familiar to your character. And after reading your comment there is NO denying that fact.

I wonder if your avatar influenced my choice. Perhaps it did, yet I used to wear a yin-yang headscarf as a bandana years ago, back the trippy-hippy days of the Second Summer of Love.

Sweet! I used to henna tattoos that were Yin/Yang in the form of dragons!
