Description I'm a big fan of old fairy tales; that's why I couldn't pass up on the chance of illustrating Jack and the Beanstalk when I saw it was this week's topic at Art Jumble .

I wanted to give my giant a more aristocratic look than what you usually see. The guy's got a magic hen, a talking harp to do his bidding, and a magnificent castle to call home -- he just didn't give me the impression of an unsophisticated oaf. And I must admit I had a lot of fun drawing a big ogre with a monocle!

Giants are by far my favorite monsters!!! I LOVE what you did with the guy, it really fits the way the story should depict him, hence he's extremely rich

That giant looks like a gorilla. But it's very beautiful.

Definitely one of your best. I love the dept and rendering of the first shot, and there's a very well achieved cinematic feel in it.

the DD description sums it up perfectly

Awesome work, man.

Well this one piece certainly makes me wish that you had the entire story illustrated (or do you?).

Unfortunately, this is the only two illustrations I did for Jack and the Beanstalk. There's too many great stories, and too little time!

Are you already a professional illustrator?
Do you have any current major projects?

Been doing this professionally for a while. These days it's mostly freelance work; I illustrate pen & paper role-playing games, do covers for young adult novels & radio plays, but I also accept commissions from private clients.

I'm not familiar with DA etiquette, so please forgive me if I'm asking too many questions.

^_^

Did you study illustration in school, or is it something you were able to get into by self study? I would very much like to study art, but since I've already finished school, it's very difficult to go back for a different discipline.

I'm completely self-taught, though I've been bouncing ideas back and forth with other artists for as long as I can remember. If you're unsure whether you want to study art or not, just mingle with other artists and focus on drawing lots and lots for now. Fortunately there's no expiry date to illustration -- it's never too late to develop your skills!

Feel free to send me a note or e-mail if you have further questions.

I love this interpretation of the giant. This giant has his own rags-to-riches story, which is about to come to a bad end.

I hope you turn this into a book someday.

This is completely wonderful ^^ Your colors are so delicious, the top panel really has depth and I feel lightheaded just looking at it Jack and his red hat stick out against the green too.

I love how you tweaked the giant's appearance. Your interpretation makes much more sense, like you said with his fancy castle and expensive treasures. Yet you still managed to make him look like a cranky tired old gorilla-ogre ^^ The diagonal view makes it seem more exciting, on top of that red color. Goodness, this is amazing XD

Everything about this I love, it would be awesome if you could illustrate the rest of the story. But if you don't, that's quite all right because just these two scenes are so exciting (probably the two most exciting scenes in the story!!)

Hrm... You portray the Giant more like a gentlemanly person, the way he's dressed... But his face does have a beastly look that completely cancels it all out. He looks ape-ish/goat-like...

Well, yours is a unique touch on the thing. Nicely done. Seriously, nicely done!!

This is perhaps the first time I've seen an orge with a monocle, let's hope he doesn't break it after being shocked by Jack or something.

The color scheme and the compisition is very well done, something that could fit into a storybook. I love the color choices. I like the take on the Orge.
