The Drunken Heroism of Nikephoros Pastilas

In 961 A.D., Byzantine general (and later Emperor) Nikephoros Phokas, led an expedition to reclaim the Isle of Crete from the Andalusian Arabs, who had conquered it in 820. The expedition was successful, and thanks to good logistics and brilliant tactics, Phokas' army steamrolled through the Island without suffering any major defeat. With one minor exception:

Phokas had instructed his men to stay ever vigilant and avoid spreading their forces to loot, lest they be ambushed by the Arabs. One general, by the name Nikephoros Pastilas ignored him, extensively looted the countryside and when the night came, set up a feast and became drunk along with his men. It was at this state that the Saracens ambushed them.

Even in this state of drunkenness though, Pastilas stood his ground and fough bravely, cutting down many Arabs. He was unhorsed and sustained many wounds, but in his stupor, he seemed to have attained a numbness to pain and ignored his wounds, killing on until he lost conciousness due to bloodloss.

At this point the Saracens swarmed him and beheaded him, routing his men. His entire force was wiped out, but a few men made it back to Phokas' camp, bringing with them the tale of the Drunken Hero Pastilas.

“Man’s good fortune does not remain forever unmixed but is mingled with adversity”

In other words, misfortune can always be mixed with epic silliness.

I wanted to illustrate that passage too actually, but your version is sooooo much better than anything I could’ve come up with that I don’t think there’s any point in doing it now

I know! Some stories are just too outrageous to believe they come from history texts!

Hahahah, always love learning some new history from your artwork.

What a man. I hope there's a monument built to him somewhere (maybe also as a military cautionary tale). Also, I'm sure Phokas (after hearing about) may have indulged in a little bit of "I told you so."

If by "indulged" you mean that whenever he talked about military caution he ended with "lest you end up like Pastilas" for the rest of the campaign, then yes. Yes he did.

In general he had a zero tolerance policy when it came to disobediance. Another general, Michael Bourtzes was left by him to supervise the siege of Antioch (969 A.D.) with strict instructions to let starvation to the work. Bourtzes instead took the city by assault when he saw the opportunity. Despite his victory, Phokas stripped him of his rank and told him to buzz off for risking the whole operation. I can see his line of thought, but I guess that was a mistake, as Bourtzes took psrt in his assassination at the hands of Tzimiskes.

Hahah, good. Somehow that makes me happy.

Yeah, I think I'd be pretty mad too if I was Boutzes. I mean, if the objective is to take the city, why not take the oppurtunity? And then be punished for doing it? That'd be a bit galling. But I do understand the principle of zero tolerance for disobedience.

Well, the city would fall to starvation anyway, so why risk it and lose human lives needlessly? I think I'd side with Phokas on this one, though the punishment was pretty heavy (and unwise). I think it would be prudent to reward him and just warn him.

Yeah, I agree with you, that probably would have been the most prudent course, but then hind-sight is 20-20, right?
