Description Watercolors

I am working on a comic taking place in the Byzantine Empire (10 century A.D.).
This is one of the characters, Irene , a noble girl from the Kingdom of Alania, with her falcon Avtandil (a common pastime among noble women in the medieval times was falconry and Caucasus has a tradition) and her father Levan. I don't want to say too much about her backstory at this point.

Honestly, and I don't feel good saying this... it looks better in real life XD. For some reason I had some trouble scanning this properly.
Anyway, I did what I could. Perhaps I'll scan it again and update it later. Any tutorial about scanning watercolors is more than welcome.

What interesting characters! And i love the level of detail you included in both the foreground and the background - it is exquisite but does not crowd the picture, if you know what i mean.

I know what you mean and I am glad Β and I am glad you think I pulled it off because I always struggle in this aspect.
I am currently working on a drawing on post-1453 Greek history and it's been killing me. I've redrawn it countless times.
Hopefully I'll pull it off.

Very nice style!
Ah yes, sometimes scanning watercolour paintings can be very annoying. I only just got a new scanner, this solved some problems.

Certainly two interesting characters. And respect their historical context maybe we can see also their neighbours of the Khazar empire and their onslaught by Sviatoslav of Kiev and the oghuz turks?

Thanks again! As a matter of fact I do intend to portray their neighboors attacking Alania. This is why she has taken refuge among a family friend in Cappadocia, where the main story is going to take place. However I did not have any of the above in mind. Seeing this map (the comic takes place during the reign of Basil II the Bulgarslayer) I was going to include the Pechenegs.

In general I couldn't find much information about the Kingdom of Alania. If you have any links you could share your help would be invaluable.

Thank you!

Ummm interesting but exactly in what moment of the reign of Basil II? At the begining of his war agaisnt Bulgaria? during his campaings in the Caucasus?

And respect the historical stuff I have some nice pictures of Alan warriors and I think also of Pechenegs that could serve you as inspiration. And respect the information I also have some pdfs and books (from google books) with information of the Kingdom of Alania.

So I will try to send you a message with the links of both during this week or the next !

In the beginning of his reign. The comic starts in 978 A.D.Β
I have some pics of Alan warriors (the one I drew here has the characteristic Alan headdress) but I am always looking for more.
Please do send any information you can. I'd appreciate it!

This is awesome! I love the way you set out the space, the girl's expression, the costumes and of course the epic background. Wonderful picture! Your comic sounds fascinating! What a great subject matter. I hope we will get to see more of it soon!

This is absolutely wonderful, I just love your Byzantine themed art - you have great talent and your selection of colours and designs of outfits are very, very good. I also like how you portray faces and how you do shades in the background - well done! Irene seems like a fascinating character, I hope to hear more about her in the future Β

Thank you for the kind words. Writing her character was actually a pain because I pretty much had to create a good character who spends most of her time home (medieval society and stuff) I tried my best giving her a good backstory and a nice personality so hopefully she will actually be an interesting character instead of coming off as a bland mary sue.

Thanks. Β I am a bit disappointing because the scanner screwed up the colors for some reason.
But it's encouraging to hear you like it nonetheless
