Description 3/18/13-4/7/13

Here's the Rex portrait I did on request by . It took a very long time and I am very grateful was so patient. It also took a very long time because I haven't really every drawn Rex before in this great of detail, nor do I draw him very often. I actually had to find some pictures of his helmet online just to get all the details right (Cody's helmet is like second nature to me ). And his hair took FOREVER!!! Out of like the 6-7 some odd hours I spent on this (like 4 of that today, tee hee! ) his hair took like 2. I really wanted to make it seem like we see his hair in the show: with a bit of skin showing through because hair is translucent. Not that I don't like a good challenge, but this was actually a really tough picture, and I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out. I also am pleased with the way his skin is shaded as I was trying a whole ton of different techniques and approaches here (use black to shade? use white to shade? use a lighter flesh color on 100% opacity? use a lighter flesh color on 'pressure opacity'?....), and finally think I found the one I like the best!

This scene isn't from any of my books or anything that I've seen on the show. It just kinda popped out of my head when I thought of a portrait of him. Comments, questions, and thoughts are much appreciated as always.

(c) Captain Rex was created by George Lucas.

Thanks you so much!! At first I was going to make the light source above him, like a room light, but then my crazy brain thought of those cool lights that line the walls in most Republic bases. I also was beginning to consider the scene being about Rex getting his new phase II armor or something.

You did a fabulous job on his hair! The texture is just right. And I love his expression, although for some reason, it makes me kind of sad. (The again, anything SW:TCW related is making me kind of emotional lately... *shakes fist at Disney*.) Anyways, which shading approach did you find you like best?

nimbus2224 In reply to xXNike-KovadrinXx [2013-04-08 00:26:03 +0000 UTC]

Thanks so much! It took fooooooreeeeevaaaaaa!! I'll admit, I think I put a Cody expression on Rex's face. That's what I get for not investigating/paying attention to the character that much.

Yeah....Disney :iconderezzplz: (<--I was hoping that worked... ) They've been ruining a lot of stuff on a regular basis lately.

I used the 'pressure opacity' + hardness 050 (aka the round airbrushy looking thing ) with various layers of different hues of skin color. I was originally trying to use a blender tool but that didn't seem to be doing much of anything nor working very quickly. I still have to work on getting the tones more blended, making more layers or finer shading, to get a better, more even result.

xXNike-KovadrinXx In reply to nimbus2224 [2013-04-08 00:32:54 +0000 UTC]

You're very welcome. And somehow I think Rex might have worn an expression like this after Umbara. It seems like a "deep-thought-questioning-life" kind of gaze, but that could just be me fabricating things.

Skin is, by far, one of the most difficult things to shade. Hair being the absolute hardest for me (I feel like you understand what I mean at this point, too.). It's tedious work trying to blend everything and achieve an even coloration. I lost track of how many colors I used on the portrait I did of Malarkey. I used the color picker tool like mad as well.

nimbus2224 In reply to xXNike-KovadrinXx [2013-04-08 00:39:41 +0000 UTC]

That is a good observation. I guess I didn't really plan on any sort of timeline placement for this picture so that could very well be why he looks the way he does here.

Yes!! Skin and hair make me balk at the very thought of shading them sometimes. Though, for me, I must say, skin is still harder. I think it's because of how it's smooth and continuous, whereas for hair I just select different colors to overly the main one. I can imagine long hair being very difficult though. The longest hair I've drawn recently is probably Tron's but that's like four inches so that's nothing compared to like your picture of Luna. I love drawing hair too. Hair, eyebrows, and shading the irises and pupils of the eyes are my favorite things to do.

xXNike-KovadrinXx In reply to nimbus2224 [2013-04-08 00:49:47 +0000 UTC]

Eyes are definitely one of my fave things to shade, especially with all the perty effects you can give the iris. ^_^ The hardest hair to shade for me is definitely Nike's, although I haven't done Luna's in a while. I think I finally established a good palette for red hair through my latest piece. The only thing I'd tweak for Nike's hair compared to Malarkey's is making it darker. Anyhow, sometimes I find it's just better to put a helmet on all of them. XD At least I have definite references for a clone trooper bucket.

nimbus2224 In reply to xXNike-KovadrinXx [2013-04-08 03:11:19 +0000 UTC]

Yes! I love the weird 'liquidy' shading that goes on with them! I can imagine! Long hair is difficult, in reality or in drawing! A helmet is a good solution for not wanting to draw the hair. Yeah, I don't even really have a set copy of what some of my clones' armor looks like nor their helmets. I should get on that....

If it makes you feel better, I've only completed two designs... And my goal is to design an entire company... So if we do the math out... That's 142 left to go?

Summer project... Definitely a summer project.

Yay! :iconclonewaving: Wow! That will definitely take some time! But a template might make it go a bit faster. I'm lame and go along with the plain white armor for all the privates for the phase 1 years. There are slight dissimilarities, but they don't really get any designs until phase 2/episode 3. :\ I do even less writing and drawing in the summer than I do in the school year. Good luck though!

xXNike-KovadrinXx In reply to nimbus2224 [2013-04-08 03:54:56 +0000 UTC]

Most definitely! I have to edit my template a bit. I want to make the face a tad bit different and also, I noticed that there was something really off with the neck.

I guess you could say the reason my troops have their armored all painted up before Ep. III is because they had nothing else better to do while being the rejects. *sighs* My poor babies! What have I done to them? (It'll get better though. )

nimbus2224 In reply to xXNike-KovadrinXx [2013-04-08 18:08:33 +0000 UTC]

Haha, that is a good reason. Mine just paint ships and stuff like that. You get a lot of good noseart coming out of the 212th (check out Landing at Point Rain, and you'll see some of their designs. ). There are little decals here and there, especially among the captains (each has a specific color and symbol that appears somewhere on their armor.). I guess I'm also trying to work in the constraints of what we see Cody's guys wearing in episode 3. Therefore I kinda stuck to the smaller, less noticable decals. I can't wait to see all the neat armor designs you have in store though!

Indeed. They're such talented artists. It makes me wonder if Jango did other things besides hunt people for a living. And yes, I understand you're trying to be as accurate to the canon as possible on those details. Probably the most unique decal I've seen in the 212th in TCW was the little Numa decals Waxer and Boil sported.

nimbus2224 In reply to xXNike-KovadrinXx [2013-04-09 02:09:26 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I did wonder too what Jango was up to in his off time. I couldn't really see him doing art, maybe some sketches, but in my books I have him writing from time to time. Just like J.T!! Yes, those Numa decals are so adorable!! I love Waxer, he has some hilarious adventures while he was still alive in my books. I also noticed the hash marks. I know some people say that Rex's tally marks are from how many kills he's made. So I wrote that the 212ths marks are for how many battles they've lived through.

xXNike-KovadrinXx In reply to nimbus2224 [2013-04-09 02:20:50 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, writing seems more like something Jango would do. I can't see him doing any intense paintings or in depth drawings. Sketches and writing definitely seem more suitable.

I'm glad you're adding more to Waxer's character in your books. He's such a great guy, and he most certainly deserved more screen time. And I find that your reasoning for tally marks makes more sense. I feel like if they were solely based off of kills, you'd start running out of room. I suppose that explains why Rex is covered in them, though.

nimbus2224 In reply to xXNike-KovadrinXx [2013-04-09 02:31:09 +0000 UTC]

It's interesting to think about, that's for sure. Epecially to see in the clones what type of personalities and gifts Jango could have possessed. Ryan does sketching, J.T does writing, Gree is an anthropologist, Oddball a composer....It's insane, but I like how it shows how flexible the human being is. That only a few select experiences can change a person or affect their interests.

I also think that, especially coming from a group of clones led by a P.O.W, a man who lost all his limbs in a minefield, a man who nearly burned to death protecting his Jedi General, ect., these guys are going to be more happy about surviving and who they didn't kill, than how many droids they shot out. Just a different perspective I suppose. By that time too, everyone was well aware of Cody's involvement on Jabiim and what happened afterwards. Not to mention the legion's officers and members beginning to get hit with PTSD. Sometimes I wish the tally marks were just for decoration.... ;_;

Yeah, I would definitely like to think about how many times I've survived as opposed to how many lives/things I've ended/dismantled.

From what I know about your books, I feel like I'd need a solid supply of Puffs Plus tissues to get through them all. The amount of clone feels I'm getting just from this conversation is so overwhelming. T_T

Haha, you might. Though three of them B.U, B.o.R, and B.o.M are probably the cheeriest. A.O is kinda depressing (the first of the whole crazy thing), B.o.J is depressing but super happy/epic at the end, and the last three make me cry when I write them. Like super nonstalgia cry though. Especially the last one....that one....It's the only reason why I have kleenx box next to me whenever I write it. ;_;
