Description Here is my entry for the 's April Color Contest. I know that I am late, but there was so much to color, such detail. It took a very long time. I spent so much time on the mushrooms that I didn't have much time to make anything else look that great. I used textures from CG Textures and I also used some form google image searches.
The lineart was done by , I didn't draw it.
I colored it using photoshop, and I used colors and textures from real mushrooms and such. Partway through coloring this I realized that parts of it are exactly mirrored on both sides, so I saved some time coloring by copying and pasting my colors from one side that I had already done.
Please tell me how you like it. I would appreciate suggestions of lighting and colors used.

I love the lighting effects and the texture on the root looking things.

Thanks, I used pictures of trees to get the texture like that. I'm glad you liked the lighting, it was kind of a fast job at the end there.

I'd say this is your strongest piece by far. You've tried new things with lighting, your textures look great on the trees and on the cat, and you've got a nice colour theme going on. Did you do the background first? Choosing your background colour can help you achieve a colour theme and therefore help you pick colours that compliment it, as you've done here.

Your dappled light effect looks really nice - as far as colour picking goes you've got it spot on. It's just the shape. The same shape seems to have been repeated over all the foreground figures, so I'm not sure if the mushrooms are supposed to be illumnated, or if you're going for sunlight sprikled in through branches. If you're looking ot achieve dappled sunlight, the shapes should be much more randomised and abstract. You only have to look in the stock gallery on DA to get a few great reference pics such as [link]

At the sides, the background looks plain - I think it would have helped to crop the image, or improvise some greenery using reference. The sky looks dark too, I can see you're trying to be consistent with the darkish pallette, but if the dappled sunlight effect is what you're going for, the sky would be a lot lighter. If you kept the foreground figures as dark as they are now, this would create a nice contrast.

This seems to be a piece where you've pushed outside your comfort zone so well done! In my opinion trying new things is the quickest way to improve.

For the dappled illumination effect I was going for light through the trees, but I don't know how to make tha shapes more irregular because I don't have any special brushes. I also was in a hurry. It was my first attempt at that effect.
I see what you mean about the darker effect on the background, I should have thought about that. I just put a transparent layer of green over the whole picture, and now I see what I did wrong. The background is plain on the sides because I didnt have time to do anything with it.
For the textures, I pasted pictures of the real sorts of objects and then made the slightly transparent and put the layer property to overlay or something simlar. So that way it had the texture of the real object, but the shading that I needed.
Thanks so much for the detailed comment, it really helps me know what to improve for my future pictures.

You don't need any special brushes, you can just improvise I find `Dianae 's brushes are best or creating your own shapes though.

I like the lighting effects you used, and the plants look really cool. I like the girl's dress, and how it is like the normal Alice dress, but a bit different too. It looks all dark and jungle like. Good job.

Thanks for the comment. I meant for it to look all dark and jungle like. I put a layer on top of all the other layers for the effect. In the end this picture had like a million layers, it was ridiculous, and I still wasn't able to do as good a job as I would have liked to.
