According to the IUCN Red List , the Hector's Dolphin is currently an Endangered species.
The smallest dolphin, also called the New Zealand Dolphin, faces a
dangerous decline thanks to being caught in gillnets at an unsustainable
rate. The Hector's Dolphin is the rarest species of marine dolphin.
Hector's Dolphins are also threatened by pollution, disease, coastal
development, and marine mining due to its close coastal range.
By pushing out the use of gillnets and encouraging wiser fishing practices,
not just dolphins can be saved, but plenty of other marine species that
are at risk of being caught as bycatch. Hector's Dolphins will be granted
greater opportunity to live on and increase from their low numbers if given
this chance.

EEK THIS IS GORGEOUS
Fun fact: I'm a huge sucker for underwater scenes, especially involving cetaceans.
The subtle netting is so defined and detailed in contrast to the background and I friggin adore it (not that the background isn't wonderful as well, of course!), it definitely gives the piece that conservation feel and is almost menacing, simply excellent.
The shape of the dolphin is also great, I find I tend to have troubles with that, haha.

The netting was changed a lot of times aha xD It was meant to be a reminder of the surprise struggles these dolphins find themselves in when they run into them, but as shown, this one is enjoying its moment of calm

Ah, I see! It is rather unfortunate how many get caught up in those nets, isn't it? There's certainly gotta be a better way to catch fish, maybe if more people used the old-fashioned fishing rod that would solve more than a few problems. x'D

Yeah, if not for such extensive use of these unsustainable, hazardous gillnets, many marine organisms would not find themselves becoming bycatch. There's so many problems...!
