According to the IUCN Red List, the Borneo Pygmy Elephant is an Endangered species.
Gentler-natured than mainland Asian Elephants and currently the smallest
species in Asia, these elephants were suspected to be descended from a
domesticated population generations back.
Factors threatening the Borneo Elephant's survival are habitat loss (via
deforestation), human settlement/human-elephant conflict, population
fragmentation, loss of food sources, and even illegal snaring.
The Borneo Elephant's conservation is of a high priority measure. Some
sources believe that these elephants are descendants to the extinct
Javan Elephant. Their status, despite being genetically distinct to mainland
Asian elephant populations, continues to be an area of curiosity.
According to WWF :
"Until WWF began working in Borneo, no one had ever studied the pygmy elephant.
In 2005, WWF successfully attached satellite collars to five pygmy elephants in different
herds in the Malaysian state of Sabah. The collaring is part of the first scientific research
ever conducted on this little-understood population.Tracking data has provided insight into
the movement of these elephants and their use of the forests. Based on the study, WWF has
made recommendations to help manage elephant forests, identify elephant corridors and
maintain critical forest areas."

Not many people know the pygmy elephant and just think of all the subspecies as asian elephants. I heard they are much more breakable and very docile when it comes to taming to use to be ridden by tourists.. and there is plenty of some called 'ethical' elephant camps

Agreed.. there are better places to see and experience elephants at their fullest, like in actual sanctuaries and, well, in the wild. But when humans have encroached (too far) onto their land and end up using or in a conflict with them *_*

Aww I'm glad I was at least able to get some of that feeling across..! When I look at photos of elephants in the wild there can be such a tender beauty in them; it pains me to find that there is actually a lot of suffering going on for many pockets of elephant populations on the unlucky end (location, etc.) I really want to do more.
