Description

 (D-21) Sita and ( D-28) Gemma.

Sita gave birth to Gemma when she was just 10 years of age, without the guidance of her own mother who had passed away 4 years earlier. Regardless, Sita (with the help of her brothers) managed to become a good mother, but it was never meant to be.

Gemma was born too small and too sickly. Her health never improved and at just 9 months old, she passed away.

One in two baby orcas never make it past their first birthday in the wild.

Sita carries and mourns her daughter who is now just another figure added on to this sad statistic. Her brothers give her space as they too mourn the loss of their niece, who never stood a chance.

When it comes losing a child, there's no word of it. I can only imagine the deep grief Sita goes through. What does me feel sadder is the light shining through the surface - it feels like the death happened on the dawn. Well, it feels like it.

Ahhh, such a touching piece and still one of my favourites from you. Especially the golden-green lighting here makes it stand out so much against the more usual blue backdrop for orcas (in most artists I mean, not just your works). Also great job on the orcas themselves, especially Sita. It's an interesting perspective you've chosen here, a 3/4 hindview, which again is rather unique but works really well here for the flow of the whole piece. Her expression is really good too, you captured the sadness well

Thank you!  You give such wonderful critiques <3

I try to think of 'different' poses to draw the whales in, but I love how this one turned out. Kind of like a 'leave it all behind' type feel to it, moving into new directions and pass the baby on into the light. And I'm trying my best now to work on different colour pallets. So much 'blue' already in my gallery, but I am trying to experiment with different colours and of course, when I do, they turn out to be my favourite drawings! This 'yellow' one, I have a 'pink' one and a 'grey-ish' one, they are definitely the standouts in my gallery.

I really like trying to bring attention to the plight of wild populations into my 'pod', teach people a few things if I can. That's why I decided to create a whole pod, so I can get diverse information with so many different members without it feeling like "THIS ONE INDIVIDUAL HAS EVERY BAD THING IN THE WORLD HAPPEN TO IT"

Ahh, you're so welcome, you really do deserve them

I think that's so wonderful, I also notice it in many of your other paintings, with orcas for example swimming towards the viewer, or seen from a low angle, or just anything different and interesting. Much better than the perpetual side views (something I'm still very much guilty of haha). But yeah, I think that 'leaving everything behind' is perhaps the best way to describe this pose. You nailed that here. Oh and I really enjoy those colour palette experiments of yours! I just had a look at the overall featured part of your gallery and you're right, they do pop out.

You bringing attention to the plight of wild orcas is also something I've noticed a lot in the descriptions of your painting (yeahh I do look at and read them, I just need to comment more), and it's something I really, really appreciate. Your whole pod is so realistic, not only in terms of bad things that may have happened to each individual, but also the relationships between them. Like how Odyss is so dependent on his mom Chia, that just fits with reality. That is awesome Also, yeahp, a whole lot better to have bad things spread out over a pod than having one ULTRA EMO SAD GUY ORCA haha

Wow, this is simply incredible. The emotion in this image is profound and evokes so many feelings. It's so well done, it's simple but I can see that a whole lot of effort has gone into this. Such a beautiful image to go with a saddening story.

Very well done (:

Thank you! At first I started drawing this with just blue hues, and 'accidentally' come across the golden colour. So I repainted it to bring in the nicer hues. I'm glad I did because it definitely changed the whole atmosphere
