Description Well, more advancements in technique! I really tried to push crayola to the limit here, putting on a lot of layers of color to get the saturation and textures that I wanted. I also studied how the light hits an apple sitting on a white surface, and tried my very best to mimic the texture of the highlights and reflections. I really wanted to go for something "hyper real" with this. Though I don't think this deserves to be called "hyper" real, I think I at least got it relatively realistic. There are some aspects I ended up leaving out due to lacking skill, but for now I am content.

Compare to this, drawn three months ago:

As always, feel free to critique! I am striving to improve, and don't mind being told something doesn't look good.

Oooh, that's one of the best drawn apples I've ever seen I love the details, like how you even drew the very veinings of the leaf and the grey fuzz on the stalk. Plus the colors look very realistic, even more than in your previous apple drawing (which was really accurate already), so you did an amazing job!

(and wow, that's a lot of colors for a single apple hehe )

Thanks! Can't wait to do this with my Prisma pencils

I tried to fit as many details in as I could. The gray fuzz was actually an accident though, as the stalk is supposed to be smooth (oops). I suppose it works either way, but it wasn't what I was trying to draw... Nice catch, though!

Something interesting about the colors: You see that green, under the stalk? Well, that's not green; it's the color "Bronze Yellow" darkened with gray. For some reason, yellow appears green when it get's darker, even though it's not.

LennyStendhal13 In reply to ninjachristian [2018-03-04 20:32:59 +0000 UTC]

Oh, well it was a happy accident then You know, some apples actually have a biz of grey fuzz aroun the stalk, so yeah, it still works

Woah, that's not green? My life is a lie!  But seriously, that's interesting! Did you know yellow behaves like this when darkened and therefore you used that effect, or was it a new discovery you made with this artwork?

Well, I knew about it, but I didn't do it intentionally; it was just kind  Similarly, light green can look yellow. I noticed all this while I was working with colors outside of any art pieces. Color illusions, yay!

The hue of green or yellow might have something to do with one looking like the other, now that I think of it.

I love optical illusions, they fascinate me ^w^ In fact, I remember that when you posted a couple of pictures on curious light and shadow effects you were able to observe a few months ago, I found them very cool

Yeah, that might be it: I think some shades of red and orange behave in a similar way under certain types of light

Oh my gosh! Okay, when I first saw this I thought "OH cool! He's using his new PrismaColor pencils!" Then I saw the word Crayola and went WHAAAAT?!?! This is a HUGE improvement for three months!  I wish I had a 20th of your coloring skills!!

ninjachristian In reply to sakuradonut [2018-02-15 01:29:35 +0000 UTC]

Hehe, I was hoping to give that impression!  The Prisma Color pencils are still sitting in a box on my bureau ^^.

Thanks, I worked quite hard for this! Point of pride: I edited this to have similar saturation to the actual piece, so though the color is a bit off, it's a pretty accurate representation of what I achieved.

This is the absolute best coloring I have managed so far. This drawing took a really long time, not just because I put down a lot of layers (that also took  forever) but I spent so much time experimenting with techniques on a separate piece of paper before applying them. To give you an idea of how long I spent on this, I started working on it on the fourth of this month. I did skip a day or two, but all of my art was focused on creating this. I don't think I even started coloring the apple till a few days before submission, since most of that time was just research and experimentation after I created the initial sketch.

Thanks! I also wish that I could do line art as good as yours. ^^

Yeesh! I don't have the patience to work on a picture for so long! Maybe that's why my coloring is awful -____- My cousin is the same way, he can spend weeks on a picture, one tiny millimeter line at a time--it makes me crazy!

ninjachristian In reply to sakuradonut [2018-02-15 02:03:53 +0000 UTC]

Oh boy! I wonder if I'll ever reach that point?
Yea, colored pencils are a reeeeeeeeeeealy slow medium. I think markers are pretty fast, perhaps something for you to try. I've seen some brilliant art done with copics, if you want to look that up (pretty expensive though).

I'm too scared of ruining my pictures to color them ⊙~⊙ I think I'll just stick with my trusty erasable pencils^u^

ninjachristian In reply to sakuradonut [2018-02-18 19:10:42 +0000 UTC]

I understand that

For me, I really wanted to color my drawings, so I got over that fear by practicing techniques outside of my artwork.
If I'm going to do a piece, I only color/draw it if I know how I want to do it, and what techniques I am going to use.
I never like going in blind. ^^

Took me so long to make this. I used up half of my mahogany pencil on just this drawing, just trying to get it as saturated as I could. That poor pencil needs a proper burial now. You have not died in vain, mahogany!

Hey, your apple isn't too bad! The perspective could use some work, but the coloring is really nice ^^

Thanks! I spent a lot of time on it ^^

Personally, I thought the last one didn't look that good, but seems some think otherwise . Can't tell why though.

Oh, poor Ender! Someone get her a real apple before she runs off a cliff or something!
