Description It seems that in trying to figure out how to do hair, I have gone over the deep end. I hope that my lack of sanity has provided you with some enjoyment! Here is a playlist I made and listened to while making this piece:MLP - Creepy

As always, feel free to let me know what you think! I tried my best to make this piece look good, even actually spending time with the line work (hope I did well). If there is anything that you feel could be improved, even if you are not sure what it is, I would be more than glad to hear it. I am really aiming to improve, so don't feel bad about telling me you don't like something about the drawing.

Pinkie Pie is a character of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and is owned by Hasbro

lol Thanks for the amazing comment Bain! I'm really glad that you like this, and your comment really put a smile on my face
I put a lot of work into learning how to create the effect of hair, so it makes me super happy that you pointed that out.

Let me quick explain my imperfect technique to get a clean drawing (imperfect cause I haven't perfected it yet): First I start off using an H pencil creating a light trace of the drawing, erasing and re-drawing as much as I need to get everything the way I want . Once I am happy with the way everything looks, I create darker lines with an HB pencil over the initial sketch, making sure to use a bit of pressure so the lines will show up after erasing. I make the darker lines as neat as I can, since these will act as the skeleton for the next stage. Then, I erase everything. The light sketch done with the H pencil completely disappears, but the lines done with HB are still visible enough that I can easily trace them. After this, I use a 3B pencil for the line work. Once I am done with the 3B pencil, I use a 9B to darken anything I want darkened. Done! That's how I made the drawing look clean .

Woooo thats a lot of steps ^^'
How long does it take?

For me, I usually draw the initial sketch using my mechanical pencil
Then, I trace back the sketch with a.. uhhhh.. what do you call that? Pigment ink pen? :3
And right after I finish the tracing step, I erase everything

Btw I'm glad I can make you smile through my comments because I normally drive people insane IRL :3c

ninjachristian In reply to MustachedBain [2018-01-22 16:20:01 +0000 UTC]

Yea, it takes more steps since you have to erase the sketch stage before you lay down the final lines; otherwise things end up really messy. This isn't a problem if the final stage is in ink, though
I think it took a couple hours; not really that long compared to a colored drawing

colored pen, I suppose? Not sure XD

You're insane comments are always welcome as far as I'm concerned! They're fun to read and can save anything from being boring ^^

I don't use ink cause my hands are really, really shaky. If I use ink, I end up just making a lot of squiggly lines. My hand jerks unexpectedly sometimes too, so it's nice to be able to erase when that happens. This is from the pills I take which help my depression from the pain; If I were to get off the pills my hands would be fine, but the depression would have adverse effects on my creativity and severely limit the quality of my art. If I get over the pain and get off the pills, I would really like to use ink; seems fun!

Woah, creepy, buuut...I LOVE HER! I've always liked the character of Pinkamena, and you were able to capture it perfectly: the constricted pupils that give her that crazy look, the very slim paws, the messy mane... I also love how you drew the ears, a little bit "crinkled" The small details around her eyes and the eyes themselves are what, in my opinion makes the difference, together with that crazy smirk of hers I see an evolution in the way you draw hair: not so long ago you were saying how you'd like to be able to draw it more realistically, without loosing the cartoony effect, and I think you managed to do so here! Her mane looks like it's ruffling in the wind and her tail looks very realistically laid on the ground
Really good job, you can be proud of yourself!
(are you planning on coloring her perhaps, sometime in the future? )

Thank you so much for your comment! I appreciate how thorough you are in saying what you like. This here is the very first time I have managed to draw hair, though I attempted many times before, and even have another drawing that is waiting to be finished because I haven't managed to make the hair look good. The crinkled ears were hardly a conscious decision; I was listening to really creepy music as I drew, and I just kind of followed the music with my lines. It's really weird how listening to music affects your subconscious.

Thanks so much! I am proud of this

I don't intend to color this, at least not in the near future. I am sticking with black and white for my drawings right now since I am focusing on the form of hair, but I might color my next drawing if I end up ready. I would really love to do a colored pinkamena at some point ^^

If the drawing I do next works out, I'll end up with a super cute submission right after this creepy one

One last thing, do you think the front shoulder looks dislocated? I've been looking at horse anatomy, and I think I have got the positioning right, but I purposely made it more expressed in reality because I felt that was the look I was going for. Not sure if I should have done it differently or not.

Hey no problem! I always try to write a comment as constructive as possible, if all I can say is "so cute" I feel like I haven't taken the time that I needed to analyze the drawing Ooh, I also listen to music when I draw, and I agree with you: it contributes to creating the right mood to draw something. For example, I've never been able to draw MLP characters while listening to metal, it just doesn't work (until now at least... maybe it would work if I were drawing Bulk Biceps though YYEEEEAAAAAAH!

I believe the shoulder is perfect for the look you wanted to give her, and it doesn' look like it is dislocated It's pretty accurate considering we are talking about a very slim character, possibly even slimmer thank the regular Pinkie to symbolize her loss of control. Also, it's coherent with the placement of the scapular bone of a horse (which isn't as straight as the leg's bone, but it's a bit tilted towards the back of the horse, like in this pic 4.bp.blogspot.com/-oSkDn3ionfA… ) and it's also coherent with the fact that she's pushing against the floor with her front hooves, so the scapula becomes more evident I think you did a great job

Looking forward to that cute artwork of yours (You may have already submitted and I haven't seen it, I'm falling behind a lot on everyone's artworks If you have, sorry, I'll try to catch up as soon as my exam is gone )

Thanks again for the well thought out feed back (sorry for late reply, I got behind a few days)

Not sure now if I'm going to do the cute pony thing next, though I think it was coming out pretty well. I have a near complete sketch, but I'm focusing more on Bain's piece and I don't think finishing the cute pony is going to further my skills in the most efficient way. I have yet to color hair, so I may end up returning to it to practice that, but I don't know if that is necessary. I'm not throwing it out; I think I'll finish it some day . I might finish the sketch and post that here; You have any thoughts about that?

Don't mention it And don't worry, as you can see I'm also pretty late (trying to catch up, though >:3)

That's fine, do what you feel like: I'm sure the result will be awesome, whatever you choose to do I'd love to see the cute sketch, though, I bet it's really adorable

The sketch is done except for the hair, but I think that I'll at least do that before moving on to Bain's piece. Still not sure how I am going to practice coloring hair; might end up coloring that sketch after all. Who knows!

Haha, don't worry, I can wait Take all the time that you need, my friend And if you ever think you're taking too long on a project of yours, just imagine that I started a project for a comic back in July and I'm still working on the first panel of the first page

Thanks, just wish I had more to show for all the practice I've been doing. I'm hoping that my next piece will be a huge jump in technique, but the wait till I can make it is almost painful

LennyStendhal13 In reply to ninjachristian [2018-02-24 21:33:50 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome And don't worry about that, we watchers can wait In Italy we say "Più lunga l'attesa, più dolce l'avere", which roughly translates to "the longer the wait, the sweeter the having": so take all the time that you need on it, and I'm sure it will look great

Oh my, great job making her look crazy! I like her pose too, very well done. The only thing I noticed is that the nearest front leg (her right leg) looks a little strange where it connects to her shoulder. It looks a bit like she dislocated her shoulder. But otherwise it looks great! Her back legs look perfect!

ninjachristian In reply to sakuradonut [2018-01-22 01:38:26 +0000 UTC]

I've been looking at horse anatomy, and I am decently sure that I got the positioning of the front shoulder right. I made it extra expressed on purpose because... Well, it just kind of felt right I guess? I normally wouldn't express them so much, but I felt it helped make her look even creepier. My mom, when I showed it to her, also thought it looked off, so I'm trying to figure out why I can't see how it's off. Do you think this is something that could be written off as a stylistic decision, or do you feel it must be fixed? Thanks again for your help!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

sakuradonut In reply to ninjachristian [2018-01-22 16:57:01 +0000 UTC]

If you intentionally exaggerated it to make the overall impression of your picture creepier then it definitely counts as a stylistic decision Like I said, it's a good picture and it definitely reads as creepy!

ninjachristian In reply to sakuradonut [2018-01-22 18:36:45 +0000 UTC]

okay thanks! You still pointed something that caused me to learn some new stuff, so this really helped me out. Did you know that horses don't have collar bones? In humans, the collar bone gives extra support and allows more movement around the trunk because it holds the shoulder a bit away from it. A horse has no collar bone, and instead the shoulder blade is held in place by muscle completely  (no bone attachments/joints to the core). I've read that this allows "great flexibility in the forelimbs" (Wikapedia-Horse skele... ) but I am not sure how it is different from humans. I think the shoulder blade is more free to rotate and move about on the core, while in humans our shoulder blades rotate farther away from the core, which means we can scratch our backs with our forelimbs/arms. Try and match that, you silly equines! no rear legs allowed. Hope you found that bit of information interesting and/or useful!

sakuradonut In reply to ninjachristian [2018-01-24 18:59:17 +0000 UTC]

That's interesting! I never would have thought about whether a horse had a collarbone or not^^ I guess the extra muscle could help the horse with its running, maybe? Or maybe God just made horses that way so that they would be even more fascinating for us to look at^~^

ninjachristian In reply to sakuradonut [2018-01-24 22:14:19 +0000 UTC]

God certainly is creative! My mom likes to bring up the platypus,
which is like a hilarious mix of a duck and a beaver and seems to be an expression of God's sense of humor .

I don't think horses have any extra muscles there, but I read that because the shoulder has no connection to the trunk, it's greater flexibility allows for much longer stride length.
Dogs shoulders are built similarly to horses, except they still have the collar bones. However, they are very small and do
not connect to other bones, so they don't serve the same function as the human collar bones do. So fun learning all this stuff!

Thanks! I think I see what you mean about the shoulders being dislocated (I think they both are if one is, right?). Thank you very much for telling me! I wouldn't have noticed it myself. I'll investigate a bit further and try to make sure I don't make the same mistake again.
