Description “You want to hear about some of the myths from my home world?” Whistle sat across from Tristan. Tristan held a pen in one hand and had a small stack of paper in front of him, ready to write it all down.

“Yes, that is exactly what I just finished explaining to you Whistle. Why do always repeat my explanations right after I say them?” Whistle shrugged in response. “Anyways, I’d like information about things that aren’t exactly proven. It’s easy to gather information on criminal activity and such, but an unidentified creature or spirit of some kind? Only a resident could even guess how to get information on those.”

“I think I see what you mean Herr Tristan. Okay, I think I’ve got one you’ll be interested in. It’s a more recent urban legend from Traverse Town.”

“From Traverse Town?” Tristan paused his writing. “I didn’t think there would be any local stories there, just recounts of stories from other worlds mixed together.”

“Well like I said, it’s a pretty recent one. Most people ignore the stories since no one can prove them one way or the other.”

“Alright, you’ve piqued my interest. So what’s it about?”

“Well, some people call it ‘Escort’ but others call it ‘Burning Knight.’ It mostly depends on which side of the story you hear.” Tristan quickly wrote everything Whistle said.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The story goes that every night, there’s a young and apparently drop-dead gorgeous woman who roams the streets. She’ll walk up to the first man she sees, always a man, and she’ll ask him to escort her somewhere. There are different stories on where, but it’s probably not important. Here’s where things get different.
If you agree to go with her, you’ll find that the route to get there is strangely devoid of people. No pedestrians, no street sweepers, not even any animals will show up. Apparently she’ll shoot innuendos and double entendres at you the whole way. If you get her there without incident, you’ll see a man waiting and she’ll join up with him. She’ll give you a quick peck on the cheek and make some kind of flirty remark.
Now, if you declined to escort her, she’ll pout and storm off. Once you get to your house later, it’ll be on fire, and nothing will be salvageable.
If you try to harm or even threaten her in any way whilst escorting her, you’ve made a very, very bad decision. A fire in the shape of a man will appear and stop you, leaving the woman completely alone. You have the option to apologize to her, and the ‘Burning Knight’ as people have taken to calling it, will disappear in a puff of smoke. If you don’t, well. . . let’s just say that no amount of sunscreen will protect someone from a burn like that.
If you flirt with her, the ‘Burning Knight’ will appear and storm towards you, but the woman will call it off, and return your flirt. The ‘Burning Knight’ won’t show up again unless you hurt her, even if you keep up with the innuendo. When you arrive at her destination, the man won’t be there, and she’ll look a bit upset. No peck on the cheek this time, she just flat out disappears.
If the ‘Burning Knight’ shows up, and you try to attack it, the woman will kick you where the sun don’t shine, then stab your eyes out with the heel of her shoes. The ‘Burning Knight’ won’t lay a finger on you, and they’ll both walk away.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

“That’s it?” Tristan looked disappointed. He’d not had nearly enough to write down to make any proper guesses as to what this creature or spirit could be.

“Well, there’s one more possible change to the encounter.” Whistle looked a bit nervous now.

“Then why didn’t you say it?”

“I’m not exactly a fan of reliving it.” Tristan gave Whistle a perplexed look.

“Reliving? You mean you’ve encountered this thing?”

“Yes and no. I saw it, but it wasn’t my ‘encounter’ per se. Me and my buddy Hazard witnessed someone else’s.” Whistle looked very troubled by this.

“I thought you said no one would be around when it happened?”

“Hennessey knows things. Things I don’t ask about. The way he explained it is that he has a way to ‘protect’ me and Hazard from the ‘dark sight.’ He said that’s why we weren’t noticed by whatever it was.” Whistle emphasized the words, clearly not understanding them. Tristan nodded. He’d have to get more information about this ‘Hennessey’ sometime.

“Well, what happened?”

“Hazard and I were out on a job, when we see this guy and a woman. They’re in an alley, but they don’t see us for some reason. The guy’s got his hand up against the wall, and the woman’s between him and the wall. I remember what she looked like way too vividly. She had silver hair and bright green eyes. The man was talking about” Whistle paused, covering his face up with his hood. He was never good at talking or even thinking about this kind of thing. “He said he was going to have ‘fun’ with her. And that’s when we saw him.”

“Who?” Tristan was on the edge of his seat at this point. A story was one thing, but getting it from someone who witnessed it was far more exciting, and better yet, reliable.

“The ‘Burning Knight.’ The second the man touched the collar of her shirt, the whole alleyway lit up, and it smelled more like brimstone than normal smoke. This fiery figure rose from the flames and lifted the guy up by the neck, squeezing it way too tightly. What came next wasn’t a pretty sight. Fire just erupted from the guy! It shot out of his mouth, his nose, hell, I think it was even coming out of his eyes! Then the ‘Burning Knight’ squeezed the man’s head off, and fire just poured from his neck when it fell. The woman huffed, and the ‘Burning Knight’ went out.”

“Went out?” Tristan paused at the odd description.

“Yeah, he went out. Like when the candle runs out of wax. Just poof, no more fire.”

“So it disappeared?”

“No, it was a guy under that fire. I’m pretty sure he was wearing a suit. I couldn’t get a good look at him though, my eyes were still adjusting to the dark after the fire. Hazard and I booked it. We’ve fought some crazy guys before, but magic? Neither of us can even think about that crazy stuff without a headache, let alone fight it on such a large scale. We told Hennessey about it, and he just kind of nodded.”

“Hm. . . well Whistle, I thank you for sharing this with me. If you can think of any more stories, I’d love to hear them. You are dismissed.” Whistle stood up and bowed before leaving the office.
