We dropped into cold stillnessSlate-grey: a mid-west afternoon
Not much of a respite, but enough
The hotel, an Anonymous Inn,
Might've been some other chain
But was its own thing.
Through the dark evening
Arrivals happened
And I wondered - watching
The almost silent mechanical birds
Land under the leaden sky -
What measure of misery and joy
Each one carried.
Soon enough the time would come
To be again one of the invisible
Brownian mass
Statistically swarming
From an here to some there
But for now there is rest
And watching.
