Description I've always liked the idea of Hank and Jean as a couple. Maybe not long term, but they might have had a short relationship in those early days when she first arrived at the school. I'm currently working on a fanfic that takes place in those earliest days of the team, before Xavier chose Scott as deputy leader. I envision Jean having something of a school girl crush on Hank and Hank himself is eyeing the job of deputy leader because he believes himself to be the most qualified. So what happened? Why did Hank and Jean's relationship break off before it got started? And exactly why was Hank passed up for the job of deputy leader of the X-Men? Those are the two main questions that I am trying to work out with my story.

Anyways, here is a sketch of those two crazy kids together. The original pencils then a quick Photoshop colored version just to get an idea of color placement and to check my composition. I decided to go with the First Class outfits for this mainly because my story was inspired by Marvel conspicuously ignoring Hank when they decided to put out the X-Men: First Class one-shots this year. I'm still really ticked that Beast got ignored and I think this story is sort of my reaction to that. Plus I've always liked the outfits, so I thought this would be a good chance to use them.

This scene is supposed to take place after X-Men #4 (March 1964), but before page 9, panel 2 of X-Men #5 (May 1964). I really wanted to drive home Hank's physical size and masculinity contrasted against Jean's petite build and femininity. Hopefully that comes through, but I'm already noticing some areas that I need to fix.

There is a Great What If....? in here..... What If Hank and Jean had stayed a couple?

Perhaps in 616 it was doomed to go another way, but somewhere it didn't and Hank and Jean became serious about each other. What effectg does that have on the others? Booby would probably be happy for them and on 'their side', Warren similar I'd guess. As for Slim? Well the thing with Jean did not really get beyond a fizzled dream leaving Scott to concentrate on team building and tactics- possibly stepping more into the role of Prof X's 'son' and administrator of the school/estate.

Longer term? Well I suspect Hank would not have left the team (and therefore gone Blue), but beyond that - too many variables.

I adore this!!! And please, please may I read your story?! I made a quick reference to Hank and Jean in my own fanfic and I have always loved the thought of them, it's so obviously been there -- there's that whole bit when he carries her through the snow (in the issue I can't remember the number of) right before the 'Dark Phoenix' thing happens and he looks so miserable at her memorial in #138. It's such a good idea.

I loved that you used the First Class outfits -- because I loved the first run of First Class, and yeah, those outfits are cool, I like the gloves for some reason -- and amen to you on the whole 'they ignored Hank' in the one-shots! I did like the Beast one-shot in "Origins" though.

But mostly, I think I love this because you actually READ X-Men and you read CLASSIC X-Men which makes me even happier. I never feel like I need to explain my thoughts about Hank to you, because I know you always 'get it', that you've been there every step of the way, and I always love that you love 'pre-furry' Hank -- because deep down, Hank is always going to be a well-meaning, polite farm boy from Illinois, and there's nothing wrong with that. I would give anything to see you do a classic Avengers Hank and Wonder Man -- it would be glorious.

Nate, you make my world a happier place.

I'm thinking about just posting the story itself, because I think doing the entire comic would take too long and, with as busy as I've been, it will be too easy to stall out on it again. This way it will also be much easier to revise it in case I've missed some continuity detail somewhere. I would like for the story to fit reasonably well within the existing continuity of the original X-Men series. So I'll start writing it out and see where it goes from there.

There are so many little hints to a relationship between Hank and Jean in the original comics if you read between the lines. The relationship between Scott and Jean didn't start (in thought bubble form) until issue #8, but prior to that Jean seemed more concerned for Hank's welfare than anyone else on the team. Also, in Amazing Adventures #12, after Hank's transformation, Jean is the first one to attempt to contact him "just to talk" and also the first to show some serious concern that no one has heard from him. Then there is the scene you mentioned with Hank carrying her through the snow. It's like two kids who used to date in high school and might have been hot and heavy at one point in time, but when the relationship broke off it's not like they could just avoid each other. So, they had to learn to put any hurt feelings aside and become friends and Hank started to look after Jean with the protectiveness of a big brother.

I've been meaning to do a Wonderman/Beast drawing for a while now, but just never found the right model to base Wonderman off of. I think I have found one though, so I'll probably start drawing out some studies and then coming up with ideas for a Hank/Simon picture... they're probably not going to be kissing though.

Anyways, thanks for your comments, I always look forward to reading your feedback on any of my drawings.

O.O Well, safe to say this is going to become my favorite Hank pic EVER. I've always loved Hank as a romantic lead, and it's not just the punny 'beauty and the beast' goodness. Who wouldn't love a guy who looks like a pro-wrestler and can do serious physical harm yet has the poetic mind of Shakespeare, the combined intelligence of Einstein and Bill Gates, AND is just a big ol' longing romantic gentleman at heart?
But I digress this really is a great piece of artwork. I like the perspective - it really gives a better impression in the size difference between Hank and an average heighted/sized lady (Jean's like what? 5'7"?). There's just not enough Hank artwork out there period, but there definitely is not enough out there showing off Hank with a lady love. Great work and I can't wait to read your fanfiction AND see more artwork!

I totally agree that Hank is probably one of the most well-rounded comic book characters in existence. He may not be the most powerful superhero in comics, but he is good at everything and it seems that writers don't really know how to handle that. Maybe he's an intimidating character to write, because he tends to steal the show, which happened a lot in the early X-Men issues; so it seems that writers focus too much on whatever new, gimmicky physical form they can come up with and do their best to shove him in the background as much as possible.

I think Jean is officially 5'6", but at 15 or 16 years old would probably be around 5'4" or 5'5" in this drawing.

Thanks!

This is amazing. Even though Jean Grey is my favorite character, I must admit, I can not take my eyes off Hank..He is sexy as hell!!!!I wish he reverted back to his human form in the comics. He would look so cool in his current costumes, but with longer sleeves and in human form with mask.

That's actually an interesting idea. I think some of the outfits that Beast wears in the recent issues of X-Men look pretty cool (it's just too bad they are wasted on that silly lion-form) and it would be interesting to see how they would be adapted to Hank in his human form. That might be something to explore later on. Thanks!

Excellent job on the pose.

Thank you! I had to use some photo references to get the pose looking right and it's actually a combination of a few different photo references. Originally I had her flying into Hank's arms, but then I remembered that she couldn't do that yet at this point in X-men continuity.

Although I'm not that much into the 60's comics, with exception of the original Conan the Barbarian, so well drawn. I must say your Hank is done with every bit as much style and
is unique and original, not just a rip off of earlier super heroes. As for Jean, I would like
to see something a bit less child-like. That's just my opinion. Maybe that's the reason,
in your scenario, Hank and Jean's relationship didn't last. Love your talented work
very much.

This is supposed to take place in the first weeks or months after Jean joins the team; but the ages of the X-men always seemed to be in a state of flux throughout the whole series. However, Hank was clearly established to be the oldest in issue #1 and Bobby was always understood to be the youngest. In the letter column for X-Men #56, Marvel places the X-Men in the 19-20 age bracket with Bobby being about 18; but I think there is still some wiggle room in there to allow for a bit of interpretation since Marvel was always reluctant to assign strict ages for their characters. For this particular scene, Hank would be about 18 years old, maybe within just a couple of months of turning 19, and Jean would be 15 going on 16. So, Hank would be a young adult, but Jean would still be considered a child at this stage.

But there is also a significant size difference between the two characters. Hank is several inches taller than Jean and his massive frame and large hands/feet would almost make him look like a giant next to her no matter what their ages. I tried to take all of that into account when drawing this picture and they are intended to look slightly awkward together. That is part of what I think makes them such an interesting couple.

Thanks for the reply. I understood the original concept,
but I thought the face, to me, looked too child like, at
15 she would be a teenager.

I guess I'm getting old then, because I would consider a teenager to still be a child.

Anyways, thanks for the feedback and I will take your comments into consideration as I continue to revise the drawing.

Thank you! Jean's face was what I was worried about the most. It took me some time to get it right and I had to redraw her entire head more than once. Her hair was a bit vexing as well, since every artist chooses to draw it differently. I started with the "big hair" that was common for her in the 80s and 90s, but eventually went with a more modern version of the shorter, shoulder-length hair she wore in those early X-Men issues.

The hair was perfect. I love now that you've established your own unique take on the X-Men, you're running with it and putting them in different poses and action (like the Hank and Bobby cover).

Keep it up! :3

NMRosario In reply to bluenique [2011-07-05 11:05:45 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! As usual the idea is expanding way beyond just the single comic that I had planned. I imagine that Xavier would have considered the leadership qualities of all 5 X-Men before choosing Scott. In my mind, Scott, Hank and Jean would be the three most qualified for leadership (even though Warren actually has military training, he is a little too much of a loose cannon; and Bobby was simply too immature at this point). Obviously, Jean would never have been chosen as the leader in the 1960s comic book, but her potential would definitely make her qualified (which might make for an interesting "what if.." story of its own).

I imagine that Hank would initially resent Scott as the leader and that combined with his frustration over Jean and the anti-mutant hysteria would all pile up until he blew-up and left the team in issue #8 (the angry mob in that issue simply being the straw that broke the camel's back). But, when the team thinks that Hank has joined Magneto, Scott is the only one who never fully loses faith in him. So when Beast rejoins the team, I would imagine that would factor in very heavily with his acceptance of Cyclops' leadership and in their strong friendship thereafter.

I guess to choose Jean as Leader, would be highly revolutionary and uncommon. But the Idea is just lovely.Hank had lots of reason for frustration in these days I guess. I had always the feeling that every male member of the group was somehow "in Love" with Jean. No wonder actually. First there was no other choice secondly Jean was so Lovely.Scott wins it-however.I'm curious about your plot^^ and i hope you got the time and the long breath. That comic I would really like to read
