Literally paper-thin is not possible to get, though some hides may be as thin as 0,5 mm. For sword sheaths I recommend about 3 mm, and for knives about 1 mm.
I have no idea of where to get leather other than here in Sweden, but I believe Google(www.google.com) may be of some assistance.

It is made by making a couple of holes in a circular pattern, and fastening a thin skin circle to the center of it. When air is pressed from the inside, it will be lifted up, allowing air to pass freely out. When air is pulled to the inside the leather will be sucked towards the surface and keep the holes covered. The thick leather piece on top of the skin piece is to keep it close enough to be pulled down quickly when inhaling.
It is the same mechanic principle that many modern gas masks works by, though they are usually very thin rubber instead of skin.

Well, tonight I sewed a hat. Not quite on size, but I kinda like it anyway.
Gillet ska segra. Även utrustningsmässigt.
