The little I've seen of G1 Megs leads me to believe he just isn't all that like TFA Megs is.

He is! They're both intelligent and cunning and evil, but G1 Megatron is a lot more merciful. He actually tolerates Starscream, and there's definitely some love goin on. In Animated, Megatron won't put up with SS at all. Animated Megatron also has a deliciously articulate vocabulary<3 G1 Megatron was like that, but not as extreme. G1 Megatron was also significantly more pathetic in some situations... but still badass and amazing.

Yeah, there's Starscream yelling about how he's going to be leader someday and Megatron more or less says, "Whatever, ho."
I think that in Animated, Megs probably was tolerating Starscream, but that happened before the first episode. What he wouldn't tolerate was betrayal- which Starscream committed in the first episode. Otherwise, Screamer would probably still be hanging around the Decepticons, trying to keep his intentions quiet. After all, he did go back to Megatron assuming Megatron knew nothing of the betrayal and would thus take him back. He also knew that Lugnut and Blitzwing wouldn't tolerate him being a traitor, so he kept them from knowing he killed Megatron even when he believed Megs throughly out of the picture and no longer a threat.

In G1, Starscream did attempt to betray Megatron quite a lot, but he was kept around anyway x) Not to mention Starscream was completely incompetent a lot of the time. But he also proved useful in some situations... kind of... not that I can really remember.... BUT, he is entertaining! And I'm sure Megatron felt the same way. Sigh <3
Yeah, Optimus in G1 is an experienced leader, whereas Animated Optimus is just a child compared to that, still trying to figure things out. At first, I hated that, I wanted Optimus to be the Gary-Sue we all know and love. But I've grown quite snuggly with Animated OP and his divine lips<3 But, yeah, another ship that doesn't make as much sense in the Animated verse, lol.

I need to watch more, but from what I can tell, Starscream tends to genuinely screw up, committing that one vital slip that maintains the status quo of everybody staying alive and nobody getting ahead.

Unless you want to go with Megatron being into that kind of torture. (I personally don't, but it's a possibility.) A shame, because there are so many wonderful screenshots of Megatron picking up Optimus and swinging him around like a dollie- but then, a ship requires more than just hilarious visuals.
Ahaha, I never thought much about his lips, but they are nice. I like Cybertron-mode Megatron's "mane".
