One could view this in a number of ways...
Before I saw your note about it being a self-portrait, my first though was that it seemed to be a face forming. Rather then having the face being blown away into dust, it's going backwards and actually creating the image.
However, after seeing the note, I began to see it as a self assessment of being, or becoming, nothing, or simply fading out into an abyss of some kind...

This portrait is really interesting. The darkness shows us the intriguing aspect of a human personality. The overall feel of the painting is rough and dramatic which makes us, the viewers, ponder over the real and profound meaning behind it. The blurred out face shows the hidden part of what seems to be a split personality, or rather a part of the character that is well hidden. That hidden part screams to be let out and tears us apart in the process of eloping that mental cae where it is being kept. The intensity of eye, it is but an eye, yet it's palpable presence begs us to question society's values. I'll conclude by saying that this work describes a melodramatic and immensely deep themes that everyone once experienced throughout their lifetime...
