Description I spent the last three days exploring the wide, wide world of pixel art. Originally I tried the 16 x 16 pixel area for sprites, but liked the 16 x 24 area I saw from Final Fantasy more. My leap into the Final Fantasy universe began with FFX, but I'm wishing I'd had a chance to play the first seven, because they just look amazing. Meanwhile FFX had Tidus.

About half of these -- the ones with heads showing, anyway; these were my first attempts at this style -- are based heavily on FFIII and FFVI sprites I saw, but I tried branching out once I had the idea of the silhouettes down pretty well. Or at least better than no clue at all.

The idea is these are citizens and machines of the first Martian city. It seems that the sprites I've seen tend toward heavy fantasy elements more so than pure science fiction, or if they are science fiction they're so far into the future that pretty much anything goes, so I thought I'd try to keep the theme straight in that realm that Star Trek and Babylon 5 occupies: sort of a mix between near and far future technology set in the mid future, several centuries from now.

I'm especially proud of the spacesuit and the big dirty mining mech, but the shading on the mech is terrible. I think if I blended the shades more on the area of the back where it's so dark, it'd look a lot better.
