Thought I'd post the process behind the watercolour painting I posted earlier this month Hope this is useful Let me know if you guys have any questions
You can see the finished artwork here: fav.me/ddw7ym7
The process was pretty straight forward, but here's a quick explanation:
- To begin with I used a hard pencil (2H) to roughly sketch out the idea of the image. I wanted to paint a cute drawing of a girl and a pigeon, so I had a pretty clear idea in my head this time around.
- Then I used a softer pencil (2B) to refine the details of the sketch so that it would be easier to ink.
- Next I used a Nib Pen and liquid black ink to do the lineart.
- I used a Masking fluid pen to mask off some of the areas that I wanted to remain untouched by the first few layers of colour.
- For the first layer of colours, I wet the paper thoroughly and used a light wash of Cerulean Blue, Raw Sienna, Sap green, Burnt Sienna and Payne's Grey to set the basic feel of the painting.
- Once the first layer dried down I began to paint the base colours for all the parts (such as her jacket, hair, skin, the pigeon, etc). Used more of the same colours - Sap Green mixed with Raw Sienna for her jacket, Burnt Sienna and Light Red for her hair, Burnt Sienna and Orange for her skin, Rose Madder for her T-shirt,I also quickly blocked in the flowers with Dioxazine Violet and Permanent Rose. For the pigeon I used Payne's grey, Pthalo Green and Purple Lake.
- Now all that was left was to remove the masked off bits and paint those areas and also refined + further define all the areas. This step is just patiently going in with a small brush and detailing everything as necessary. Used more of the same colours as before. For her eyes I used a light wash of Emerald Green. For the lashes I used Sepia. Added a touch of Permanent rose to the pigeon. For the railing I used Payne's Grey, Raw Umber, Raw Sienna and Light Red.
- Coloured up the pocky box and the pocky itself. The BG flowers felt a little strong so I used some white watercolour to soften them up. Added a very light wash of Dioxazine Violet + Permanent Rose for a bit of ambient colour in her hair and her jacket. Added details to her iris with Pthalo Blue and Ivory Black. Used some Cadmium Yellow for a touch of warmth on the pigeon, railing and the BG. Finally added some details with white gel pen. Et Voila~ It is done
I didn't use too many colours for this piece. Tried to stick to a simpler colour palette.
The colours I used were: Cerulean Blue, Raw Sienna, Sap Green, Indian Red, Light Red, Burnt Sienna, Dioxazine Violet, Purple Lake, Rose Madder, Permanent Rose, Cadmium Yellow, Emerald green, Payne's Grey, Sepia, Pthalo Blue and a bit of white.
The supplies I used were:

Winsor Newton Cotman Watercolours
Faber Castell Castell 9000 pencil (2H)
0.3 mechanical pencil (2B)
Deleter Black 4 ink
Deleter g-pen & nib holder
