Great photo!
Just keep in mind that whatever you post (especially art), someone will be offended by something in it, that just the way our culture seems to be now. I've had people get offended by me posting naked girls, or even fetish stuff before, but I did it because I though it was beautiful, and that I wanted to share that beauty with the world. Make art because you like it, worrying about what others think will only hurt your creativity!

just like ~mowgli-love said: "What ISN'T appropriation these days?
Stretching your ears are appropriation, and mohawks, and piercings, and so are tattoos. There's no escaping it. But how many people do those things? And it's okay, more importantly how many of those examples apply to yourself?"

I really dont want to get into the whole racism debate, but i will say this is a lovely photo, but Im tired of seeing all these pretty girls in headdresses, I wish maybe they would use someone who actually has earned the right to wear one and photograph them, which adds meaning or at the very least a native person. this photo is BEAUTIFUL! but has no real message.

The wearing of feathers and warbonnets in Native communities is not a fashion choice. Eagle feathers are presented as symbols of honor and respect and have to be earned. Some communities give them to children when they become adults through special ceremonies, others present the feathers as a way of commemorating an act or event of deep significance. Warbonnets especially are reserved for respected figures of power. The other issue is that warbonnets are reserved for men in Native communities, and nearly all of these pictures show women sporting the headdresses. I can't read it as an act of feminism or subverting the patriarchal society, it's an act of utter disrespect for the origins of the practice. (see my post on sweatlodges for more on the misinterpretation of the role of women). This is just as bad as running around in a pope hat and a bikini, or a Sikh turban cause it's "cute".

I'm actually native american. I grew up on the reservation and am an actual enrolled member. I know the cultural significance of the things that I do. I have a tattoo of the bear clan because that's where my family is from. this is WHY I put the article up. LOOK at my profile before assuming my race.

I never assumed your race at all. You must not have understood my comment, if that's all you got from it.
I was trying to say: if you're going to get offended by something like this, get offend by everything else that is considered appropriative. Do you get offended by seeing someone with tattoos who are not Ainu or Maori? Do you get offended by people who stretch their ears and they are not Surma or Mursi?
Since you invited me to your page, I took at your favorites. Judging by what it contains, I'll take that as a "no".

Stretched ears and septum rings were also a part of Native culture. I wouldn't know if Ainu or Maori would get offended because I am neither Ainu or Maori. Same goes with being Surma or Mursi. I am offended because it's something I see all the time about my culture. The only parts of native culture I apply to myself are the parts that I learned from my people and know that when I wear them I'm not representing an entire culture, I'm representing my specific tribe and myself. What offends you?

I totally understand you and all that makes perfect sense, but I feel like photos like these are not all that bad. And that's where we differ.
I agree that it's not okay to parade around in a headdress, but I don't mind if someone does it and they know their facts about it, whether they're Native American or White. Hipsters on the other hand...haha. I also agree with what you said about the stereotyping.
In all honesty, I'm actually pretty hard to offend. I have tattoos and piercings, I collect and wear kimono/yukata, but I am mixed blackxwhite(polish). The only thing that offends me is "real woman" bullshit, the N word, and people who can't take joke about anything.

If the photographer knows the facts about the headdress he should make a point about knowing it then. One of the comments was saying they "wanted that hat". You have to educate people on native culture and different aspects of it. I don't support photos like these at all. Even if it's a "nice" photo, I'm sure it would've been completely fine without her wearing a headdress.
Well I'm not sure if the last part was towards me, but I don't see my culture as a joke.

No it wasn't towards you, that was me just answering the question. No ones culture is a joke.
I must have missed that comment, but if that's the case, then I completely agree with you and my previous comment went to waste ):

It was a comment a viewer had posted. I respect the dialogue we've had with each other. I'm just been at that point in my life where I've gotten tired of cultural ignorance and misrepresentation. In the past 2 weeks I have had someone laugh in my face and tell me my culture was a nonexistent lie and that white people have ALWAYS been in North America. I've also been told my people aren't a threat to anyone because we are statistically insignificant to the rest of the college campus. We are like 322 out of over 44000 which makes us .89% of the entire campus. I've been working hard to bring awareness of Native Americans to people at my school who still think "white people killed all of them" or "I thought we got them all". I want awareness and visualization of Native Americans but by doing photos like these isn't the way to do it.

We support your race on our island. They learn Hinduism culture, meditation, offerings, and we are OPEN. They join our cremation ceremony, they took documentation pictures without permission, are we mad ? NO. Now let me tell you something, this is my fucking page and I have rights to ask you to stop replying all of people thoughts, it will just create another debate. I didn't laugh on your face and tell that your culture is a lie or something. I love it, this is the way I show it, but maybe it is wrong. If you have troubles with other people, it's your problem, and I'm sorry about that.

I see.
I'm sorry you experience so much ignorance at school and can understand your motivation now.
It's a terrible thing that has happened to Native American people and their culture. I've always admired it from afar.
Like a lot of countries, it's easy to remember the bad that's happened to them, but hard to remember what they did to others.
